Dead green turtle on the new beach of Thessaloniki

by

A sea turtle of the green turtle or mussel species was found dead on Sunday afternoon, in the sea area of the new beach of Thessaloniki.

The Central Port Authority of the city informed the competent service for the landfill.

What is a green turtle?

The green turtle, Chelonia mydas (Linnaeus, 1758) is a large sea turtle of the Cheloniidae family. It is the only species of the genus Chelonia.

Its geographical distribution includes tropical and subtropical waters around the world, with two distinct populations in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and may also be found in the Indian Ocean. Its common name does not come from its color, but from the color of the fat at the bottom of the eel.

It lives permanently in the sea and the females go ashore only to give birth.

Green turtles, like other species of sea turtles, are particularly prone to declining populations due to anthropogenic activities at all stages of life: from eggs to adults. Perhaps the most damaging human threat to green turtles is the deliberate harvesting of eggs and adults from spawning grounds. An equally important danger for sea turtles is the ingestion of plastic.

In our country the Archelaus Association acts to protect sea turtles.
