The scientists of the Prespa Protection Society are still on alert for the bird flu after the completion of the collection operation Hundreds of dead pelicans.
“So far, the phenomenon in Mikri Prespa seems to be slowing down while there are no cases of death from H5N1 flu in new bird arrivals,” the director of the Prespa Protection Company, Myrsini Malakou, told APE-MPE, expressing the hope that there will be no more.
According to the latest data from the Prespa Protection Company, on March 24, when the large operation to remove dead pelicans was completed, 1143 birds were collected. At the same time, the network of associates and volunteers of the Company, recorded 300 deaths of silver pelicans in another 9 wetlands of Northern and Central Greece. THE business continues by monitoring the area to detect and remove any new cases.
“We hope that we will no longer have H5N1 cases as, watching the colonies in Mikri Prespa, we do not see any dead birds so far. “Also, from the side of the lake in Albania, only 3 dead birds were identified,” Ms. Malakou underlined.
