The kidney transplantation was completed with the “Hippocrates” Hospital in Thessaloniki by the 14 -year -old who drowned on the Arachthos River into a 32 -year -old man.
The recipient will remain in close medical monitoring in the next 24 hours, according to the intended protocol.
At the same time, the dawn on Tuesday will be removed from the organs and from the youngest child, 12 years old, who was also drowned in the river, so that the liver transplant can follow in the same Thessaloniki hospital. In addition, the possible transplantation for the pancreas and a kidney will be considered.
Two families immersed in mourning transform the untold tragedy into hope, offering life to other people. The parents of the 14 -year -old and the 12 -year -old boy who died on the Arachthos River decided to donate organs, giving life to comrades.
According to epiruspost, the process of taking the 12 -year -old’s organs is expected to start tonight at the University Hospital of Patras. If all evolves smoothly, it will be – for the first time in Greece – a pancreas transplant from a child.
The taking of the organs was originally scheduled for Monday morning, but Italian doctors sought more time to evaluate the appropriateness of the child’s heart and lungs. The process has been transferred to the time today, with Greek doctors hoping that the pancreas will also be used.
14 -year -old Spyros lost his life in his attempt to save his youngest friend. In a climate of deep emotion, hospital doctors paid tribute to the unfortunate teenager shortly before the donation process began.
The first transplants have already taken place. One kidney of the 14 -year -old was transplanted into a 32 -year -old patient at the Hippocrates Hospital of Thessaloniki, with doctors appearing to be optimistic about developing the recipient’s health. The kidneys and the liver were taken to the “Laiko” “Athens” hospitals and “Hippocrates” in Thessaloniki, while the cornea were taken to AHEPA and Laiko, where transplants are planned – one is expected to be given to a child.
The 12 -year -old’s liver is reportedly intended for a child’s recipient and his transfer to Hippocrates is expected to take place tomorrow.
What doctors say
The first transplant in Hippocrates went well, as the General Surgeon, Associate Professor of Surgery – Transplantation at AUTH Nikolaos Antoniadis, told RES -EIA, who underlined the importance of donating organs by relatives, who in the midst of relatives.
“Brain death is death. It is confirmed by exams that are absolute and I mention it because there are some disputes. The brain is dead and the body is maintained with the machinery. The maintenance of the circulatory system is artificial. We must mention this so that there is no question in society, “said Antoniadis.
“The instruments are used and some of our fellow citizens always benefit. Kidney transplants are the only cure, being in dialysis is not a solution, and liver and heart transplants are surgery that saves lives, ”the surgeon concluded.
In addition, one of the 14 -year -old cornea is in AHEPA Hospital in Thessaloniki where his transplant is expected to be planned.
