“We will have a difficult night,” Crete Regional Governor Stavros Arnaoutakis, who is heading for Ierapetra, said in a statement, amid a huge operation set up by the Fire Department to extinguish the fire that broke out early in the afternoon. Mr Arnaoutakis pointed out that aid is expected from Athens, while commenting that “the aim is to protect human life and immediately after the property”.

Indeed, the Crete Regional Governor clarified that the whole mechanism is also a foot, while pointing out that there would be cooperation between bodies to meet the needs, even tourists who had to move from hotel units, after the message, through 112, for the settlements of Koutsi, Aklia.

According to Crete’s Civil Protection Vice -Mayor George Tsapakos, “the battle with flames will be overnight”, and as he has known, after contacting Civil Protection Minister Yiannis Kefalogiannis himself, aids are expected by the firefighters.

Mr Tsapakos also said that the task of extinguishing is extremely difficult due to the intensity of the winds and the change of their management.

Anxiety and concern are expressed by residents of the area expressing fear of flames and the risk of passing through residential zones.
