Its systematic research work Museum of Natural History of Petrified Forest Lesvos It continues to reveal the unique wealth of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos! Museum executives will present to the public for the first time the new data brought to light by scientific research in Western Lesvos.

On Friday, July 18th, at 6pm, they organize an afternoon tour of the new fossil parks along the Kalloni -Sigri road axis.

“The research data that is continuing intensively by the Museum researchers in collaboration with researchers from the Aegean and Patras Universities as well as the Chinese Nanjing Institute of Paleontology of Nanjing, the Director of the Museum, Professor Nikos Zouros, tells RES-EIA. between 18.5 and 17 million years from today. “

The year that passed us through the findings of fossilized trunks, and in particular from the tiny study of fossil wood in these sites, a multitude of new kinds of trees that are new species for science, which are first identified for the first time, not only in Lesvos but also worldwide, were revealed.

“These new species, says Mr Zouros, are the Lesvos cinnamon, three new types of pine trees and a new kind of pine endemic to Lesvos, two new types of cypress and three new species of the Sekia family.”

These data are added to the new data from the study of fossilized leaves, the study of which is also continuing intensively by researchers from the Aegean and Patras Universities.

“Slowly, Mr Zouros concludes, many new elements are revealed about the fossilized ecosystems of Western Lesvos that arouse the interest of researchers from around the world while at the same time sparking the interest of the island’s visitors as the Museum’s initiatives are now attributed to the general public!”

The new fossil parks along the Kalloni -Sigri road axis to be presented on Friday, July 18th, are as follows:

“Sigiri” Park

The new Petry Park “Prisoner, one of the first places that have emerged along the Kalloni -Sigri road, is three kilometers from the settlement of Sigri. This is a particularly important place in which the presence of successive fossilized forests that were fossilized due to successive volcanic explosions.

Excavation research has brought to light a unique in development of a root system of subtropical tree that has been exemplified and preserved.

Equal trunks of fossil trees have been revealed in the same location. The visitor can also encounter full of fruit tree trunks that have been revealed in fossils along the new road and are now accessible to the public as they are maintained under special elegant shelters.

Bahariotakis Park

The new Petry Park “Bahariotaki”, which opens for the first time to the public, is one of the first places to emerge along the Kalloni-Sigri road axis and is located four kilometers from the settlement of Sigri.

The excavation has brought to light a set of fossilized trunks dragged by firearm flows and found in today’s excavated and exemplary maintained position. The flow of volcanic mud flow is from south to north, showing the volcanic center of the Mesotopos as a possible origin of the firearm flows. The visitor can encounter full of fruit trees that have been revealed and are now accessible to the public. In the same position, equal lines of tree trunks have been revealed with their root system growing within the underlying volcanic formations that host downstream fossil tree trunks.

Kochini Park

The new “Kotsini” fossil park, is one of the most important fossils that have emerged along the Kalloni-Sigri road axis and is six kilometers from the settlement of Sigri. This is a particularly important place. The excavation has brought to light a set of lifted fossil trunks that have been fossilized in their current position have been excavated and preserved and protected by specially designed roofs. In the same position, old -fashioned pacifists have been revealed that hosts a multitude of fossil leaves. The giant rally trunks of coniferous trees as well as fruit trees are particularly impressive. Also, the visitor can encounter large full -fledged fruit trees that have been revealed and are now accessible to the public.

Park “I. Toumbelekis »in the Akroiria area

In the new Ioannis Toumbelekis Pistrion Park on the Akroira hill, there are four consecutive horizons with upright fossil trees, documenting the event of four large volcanic eruptions that led to the fossils of Equal Forests!

It is therefore confirmed by the scientific observation that Lesvos hosts dozens of fossilized forests of different age and synthesis that constitute a unique one in the type of archive of the Aegean area during the Miocaine period. This archive was created by the large and devastating volcanic eruptions that the area experienced for a period of about three million years!

“Well” park in the Akroiria area

Hundreds of fossilized tree trunks on successive horizons are displayed in the new Fossil Park on the Akrofiri Hill, which document the event of successive large volcanic eruptions followed by large muds that drove them to the trees!

It should be noted that the emergence of the fossil positions was funded by the North Aegean 2014-2020 PPP in the framework of the “actions of the promotion of protected areas of Lesvos”.
