The Ministry of Rural Development and Food, the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace and the Hellenic Agricultural Organization-DIMITRA today signed a Memorandum of Understanding and a program contract aimed at upgrading agriculture and livestock farming in the region.
At the center is the upgrading of existing infrastructure of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food and the bodies that supervise it in the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. In particular, it is foreseen to upgrade the existing animal exotic disease center to the European Center for Imported Animal Diseases in order to create an Early Warning System system in a critical region that is the portal of animal health protection, Rural development.
The Memorandum of Understanding provides for cooperation on zoosthroponic, prevention of epizociotic and early intervention in border areas by enhancing biosexiety in production. It is also envisaged to develop research programs to tackle the impact of climate change on animal health, the development of biological livestock farming and low -inflows in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace as well as transferring knowledge to the professionals of the agri -food sector in the area for improvement.
Due to its geographical location, the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace is one of Greece’s most sensitive geographical apartments in terms of the risk of transporting diseases from neighboring countries.
The programmatic contract between the three parties, which has been signed today, is based on the need to address the cross -border risks that threaten animal health through the close cooperation of the three bodies.
The Minister of Rural Development and Food, Costas Tsiaras, reiterated the government’s interest in the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace and especially Evros, from which, as he typically said, “from there Greece and Europe begins” and stressed that in practice the signing of the Prime Minister. He said that the Ministry’s interest in staffing the center is self -evident as his geographical location makes it even more important in dealing with and prevention of zoonoses. An important role, Mr. Tsiaras stressed, will be played in this direction, the actions that will be taken by the Center, such as the training of breeders, the early diagnosis of zoonoses and the prevention, elements that will add value to our products and contribute to the development of the area.
The regional governor, Christodoulos Topsidis, expressed his confidence that the good cooperation of the bodies signing the program contract would bring positive results to the area. The Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (PAMTH), having veterinary issues in its responsibility, seeks to promote the protection of animal health and public health and through research to obtain personalized data on the area and to develop targeted and efficient programs.
ELGO-DIMITRA Vice President Nektarios Vidakis noted that the Agency as a Central Research Agency of the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning, with its experienced and specialized staff at its competent institutes, will provide the necessary know-how to optimize the operation of the “exotic”
The signing of the Planning Agreement was attended by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning, Spyros Protopsaltis and Antonis Filippis, Vice President of ELGO – DIMITRA, Panagiotis Chatzinikolaou and Evros MP Anastasios Dimoschakis and officials.
