A heat wave with record temperatures recorded in Finland in recent weeks has affected reindeer, causing the deaths of many of them and raising fears between breeders.
Finland came from a 22 -day heat episode with maximum temperatures reaching 30 degrees Celsius, in the longest wave of heat recorded since the commencement of registries in 1961, the Finnish meteorological service confirmed yesterday.
In the city of Rovaniemi, known as the city of Santa Claus, mercury remained today at 26 degrees Celsius.
The droughts and forest fires caused by this unprecedented heat, influenced the reindeer living in the area, Anne Olila, director of the National Rinding Breeders Association, explained to the French News Agency.
“We had a very long and hard heat here in Lapland and the reindeer suffered a lot,” he said. Many of them died, she added, without being able to clarify the number.
According to her, although this particular Arctic animal can easily withstand polar temperatures, for the heat is “another story” because reindeers “fail to regulate their body temperature”.
