Balta: “Need for complete and equal participation of women in political and public life”
Greece’s permanent representative Ambassador A. Balta in her speech confirmed our country’s steadfast support in promoting the agenda for women, peace and security and stressed that sustainable peace and security are inextricably linked to gender equality.
He condemned all the violations of human rights and the fundamental freedoms of women, emphasizing the need for accountability and also emphasized the need for complete, equal and substantial participation of women in political and public life, as well as in decision -making processes.

Guterres: “Women’s leadership is the foundation for fair and lasting peace”
UN Secretary -General Antonio Guterres stressed that “we are concentrating on rooms full of conviction and commitment – only to fail when it comes to a real change in the lives of women and girls living in conflicts.”
He pointed out that “we are talking about participation, and yet women remain out of negotiations, we are talking about protection, but sexual violence continues unpunished.”
Mr Guterres said that 676 million women live less than 50 kilometers from deadly conflicts, while incidents of sexual violence increased by 35%, with “some areas where girls are almost half of the victims”.
Referring to Afghanistan, he spoke of “systematically deleting women and girls from public life”, while in the occupied Palestinian territories, Sudan, Haiti and Myanmar women “face horrific levels of violence and serious dangers”.
The Secretary -General called on the Member States to “accelerate the implementation of the commitments of the pact for the future”, presenting eight axes of action: funding, participation, accountability, protection, national integration, financial security, support for women’s organizations and “gender -based data revolution”.

Baus: “Gender Equality accepts a new regression”
In turn, the UN Deputy Secretary General and UN Women Executive Director, Sima Baus, He warned that “the foundations of world peace and security are threatened” as “military spending is increasing and gender equality is receiving a new regression”.
Referring to the situation in Afghanistan, he underlined that “92% of Afghans believe that girls should be able to attend secondary education” and that “the hope of Afghan women is not a mere wish, it is a political statement and a source of inspiration”.
Regarding Gaza, he talked about “a ray of hope in pain and loss”, expressing the hope of leading “a fair and lasting peace for Palestinians and Israelis, where all women and girls will live with dignity and safety.”
In closing, he stressed that the next 25 years of the agenda women, peace and security should be characterized by “targeted funding, clear orders and accountability mechanisms”.
