The Minister of Environment and Energy, Stavros Papastavroumade a series of visits to Amorgosthe Hell, China and Levithawhere he met with local authorities and bodies. Visits are included in public consultation for “Special Environmental Study” and they concern the new National Marine Park “South Aegean 1 – Southern Cyclades”. The visit is a continuation of the issuance of Presidential Decree 73/2025 that regulates fishing in the coastal zone of Amorgos.

During the visit, a teleconference was held by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis with the participation of the Minister of Rural Development and Food Costas Tsiaras, Deputy Minister Christos Kella, Special Adviser at Oceans 5 and Rockefeller Brothers Foundation, as well as former EU Maria Damanaki. Mr. Papastavrou participated from the offices in Katapola, along with the mayor Amorgou Lefteris Karaiskos and his representatives Professional Fisheries Association of Amorgos “Hozoviotissa”.

At the heart of the discussion was found the initiative “Amorgororama” of the Fisheries Association, which aims to protect the island’s marine ecosystem. Actions include stopping fishing activity in April and May, cleaning inaccessible beaches with boats over the same period and the creation of three protected marine zones (fishing banning zones) along the Amorgos coastline.

Visits to remote islands of the National Marine Park

Mr. Papastavrou also visited the islands of Liadia, China and Levitha, located at the easternmost end of the National Marine Park. In China, he paid tribute to the Navy’s Monument to the Navy Officers, Lieutenant -Colonel Anastasios Toulitsis, Lieutenant Colonel Konstantinos Panana, and Defendant Eleftherios Evangelou, who lost their lives in 2016.“Mrs Rhinio”). In Levitha, he had contact with the members of the acrimonious family who live permanently on the island.
