An illegal animal cemetery was discovered in the “heart” of the Gendarmerie Grove in Athens, following citizens’ complaints in the Municipality of Athens.

As the Municipality of Athens announced, this site is near the Municipal Veterinary Clinic, and was illegally used by 2021 for the burial of pets. It is noteworthy that new complaints have come with citizens from yesterday until today to indicate other points within the Gendarmerie Grove where dozens of animals are buried.

“We are in the Storage Grove. Yesterday, we received a complaint – which remains anonymous at present – that dozens of animals have been buried in the grove. Under uncertain conditions were found here, with the participation of municipal officials. As soon as we received this complaint, and in consultation with the Mayor of Athens Haris Doukas, we came to the Grove with a special workshop and conducted an autopsy, “Olga Dourou, Vice Mayor of Interrogation, Solidarity, Breakfast and Bourgeois.

As he explains, “the autopsy showed that there was really a skeleton initially and then we found others. We immediately called the police, which came here. We then excluded the site with the Municipal Police workers. I went to the section to file a lawsuit against everyone responsible for these illegal animal burials in the grove. “

The correct procedure for dead animals

Olga Dourou points out that this illegal burial poses health risks as many children play in the Stock Exchange. In addition, as he points out, there is the legitimate procedure for dying animals:

“The Municipality of Athens has a legal way in which it treats dead animals, which is burning. In addition to the legal procedures in cooperation with the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Police, we are in the process of internal administrative examination (SAD) to see what the source is. The animals we have found for now are old since 2021. We cannot know until when this situation has continued, but it is something we will investigate with the help of the SAD, “says Olga Dourou.

It is noted that the sections of the grove where animal bones have been identified have been excluded from municipal officials with a special film and the site is kept.
