Significant international distinction has achieved the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NCSR)occupying the 237th place worldwide among 32,000 universities, according to the recently published ranking ‘Webometrics Ranking Web of Universities’. The NCSR has emerged, for another year, first between Greek and Cypriot universities and Higher Education Service providers, among 105 total institutions included in the evaluation.
In second place for Greece and Cyprus is the Aristotle University of Thessalonikiwhich is ranked 249th worldwide. Follow the National Technical University (378th position), the Patras University (524H) and the University of Crete (573), complementing the top five of the country’s top institutions.
As far as Cypriot universities are concerned, at the highest position the Public University of Cypruswhich ranks 619th worldwide.
Webometrics evaluation criteria
The classification ‘Webometrics Ranking Web of Universities’which is completing this year 22 years of presence In international academic rankings, he is drawn up by the Cybermetrics (CCHS), research unit of Spanish National Research Council – CSICthe most important research body in Spain. The evaluation is based on data on more than 32,000 universities from 200 countries.
Universities are ranked on the basis of presence and their popularity in the world web, influence of their research work – As reflected in the number of hetero -references of their academic publications – but also percentage of their tasks belonging to 10% of the most accessible and significant internationally.

As noted, “The basic principle of this ranking is that in today’s era the majority of the most important activities of an academic institution must be reflected in the world fabric.”.

The Webometrics Ranking published for 23rd consecutive year Since 2004, with renewals twice a year, every January and July, providing constantly updated data to the world academic community.
