The beginning of a pilot project for flood and fire protection of Ithaca announced the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Christos Stylianidisduring his visit to the island.
This program will be based on triptych prevention – preparation / preparedness – resilience and will try to adapt to the conditions created by the climate crisis. As Mr. Stylianidis stressed, this is an “ambitious program, a great effort to strengthen overall resilience, to strengthen prevention.
“A program with two parallel axes – the flood protection, but also the fire protection of the island. This is a pilot program to adapt to the conditions created by the climate crisis. A program holistic in its approach, based on the triptych prevention – preparation / preparedness – resilience “, he stated characteristically, while he added that after the bad weather” Ballos “that hit the island hard last October, Ithaca is shielded against floods.
“In addition, Ithaca is an area that can be used as an example to ‘run’ this new program, taking into account the special needs of the island in matters of fire protection. With specific interventions, we ensure both flood and fire protection. We ensure – above all – human life, the property of our fellow citizens and the infrastructure of the island. In the meeting we held, we decided to proceed, in cooperation with the Ionian Islands Region and the Municipality of Ithaca, to a program contract with the relevant ministries, so that the necessary studies can begin immediately. We had a very productive discussion, so that all the bureaucratic problems that exist can be overcome quickly and the shielding works of the island can start immediately “, noted Mr. Stylianidis.
During his visit to Ithaca (which was completed) Mr. Stylianidis met with all local bodies, while the purpose of the visit was to proceed immediately, in collaboration with the Ionian Islands Region and the municipality of Ithacathe design of this pilot, “model” program for the flood and fire protection of the islandespecially after the catastrophes that Ithaca suffered due to the bad weather “Ballos”, but also due to its vulnerability to forest fires.
The Minister, accompanied by General Secretary of Civil Protection, Vassilios Papageorgiou, the MP of Kefalonia-Ithaca, Panagi Kappatos, the deputy governor of Kefallinia-Ithaca, Stavros Travlos, the prefect of Ithaca, Athanasios Livitsanis, the mayor of Ithaca, the mayor of Ithaca, performed autopsies in areas and streams that need interventions. Specifically, he visited the areas of Aeto, Stavros, Frikes, Kioni, Perachori, Ag. Friday and Marathia, where he was informed in detail about the works to be launched.
