Again, dozens of elderly expatriates from Georgia are accused of receiving or attempting to receive uninsured elderly benefits from the Social Solidarity Predictive Bonus (OPECA).
The case was judged last March, when the Thessaloniki One -Member Criminal Court, after a long audience, found guilty of more than 35 accused elderly (men and women), who imposed a sentence of 14 to 28 months. Dozens had also become accused and acquitted by the same decision- while for some the persecution of death.
Following the appeal of a prosecutor, which concerned the legitimacy of the acquittals and the granting of the mitigating to those who were found guilty, the case will be re-judged on a zero basis, by a Senior Court- in this case the Thessaloniki Criminal Court. Following a postponement given, the trial was determined for the next October.
The defendants face, where appropriate, the acts of the abduction of false certificates and attempts to use fake document and fraud. Those who were convicted last March had in turn brought appeals. The main line of defense of the defendants was that they were in error and that they were deceived by people who undertook to carry out this process.
According to the indictment, the persons involved were producing fake documents, translated into the Greek language, which were supposedly issued by the Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Protection of Agriculture, asserting that they are not registered in the pension and retirement region and do not receive any other retirement or retirement.
The acts appear to have been held in 2018/19, while many of them, according to the indictment, have managed to get the allowances in question, over 200 euros/monthly, with the amount of fraud exceeding 13,000 euros in some cases. Some have failed to become beneficiaries of the allowance because officials of the competent Service of the Central Macedonia Region called for the inspection of the certificates. All cases included in the indictment were checked by the Greek Embassy in Tbilisi and found that the supporting documents had not been issued by the competent authority of agriculture, nor had the planned stamp.
