Extension of Metro Line 2 to Ilion

The extension implemented at the moment in Attica is that of Line 2 to Ilion, about 4 km long with 3 stations (Palatiani, Ilion and Ag. Nicholas). At the same time, the expansion and modernization of the train station in Eleonas, as well as the upgrading – replacement of the existing Athens Systems of Athens Metro of Athens, has been included in the same project. The first stage of the competition has been completed and will soon follow the second stage. The estimated start of the construction is 2027 with a conventional delivery time of 5 years.

The task of expanding to Ilion also includes the extension of the existing Eleonas train station. Since the future operation of the extension, as well as the other current needs of HELLENIC METRO SA. It is necessary to find and construct additional train areas to serve the trains, and the expansion of the Eleonas train station in a neighboring area of about 20 acres will proceed at the same time.

The future operation of the extension becomes necessary to upgrade/replace certain Systems in a large part or even the total of the metro lines 2 & 3, without which further extension will not be possible.

For this reason, the project notice also includes the upgrade and / or replacement of the digital data transmission system to all lines of lines 2 & 3 in operation. Modifications to these systems will require new equipment and software both at the existing Control Center in the Constitution and locally on stations and wells. However, their connection to today’s systems is predicted without any discontinuation of lines 2 and 3.

The extension will concern the route after the “Anthoupoli” station to the area of Ilios and Agios Nikolaos and further in the future to Acharnes and is designed for:

  • The service of many densely populated areas of the western suburbs.
  • The future increase in metro networking with the provision of response to the “Ilion” station with the future extension of line 4 to Petersburg.

The new stations will be as follows:

  • “Palatiani” Station: It is located at the intersection of Thebes and Andrea Papandreou streets and has two entrances on either side of Thebes Street.
  • “Ilion” Station: located at the intersection of Thebes and Olives, has two entrances on either side of Thebes Street and a prediction of connection/transition of passengers with the homonymous station of the future extension of Line 4 to Petersburg.
  • “Agios Nikolaos”: located beneath the homonymous road and part of the designed green space located between Paramythia, Olynthos, Zitsis and Ag. Nicholas.
  • Palatiani is also expected to be built a transfer station in an adjacent area tangent to the “Palatiani” station between Andrea Papandreou and Ikoniou streets with a three -level car park and a capacity of 150 IX, with a direct connection to the station. On the surface, after completing its construction, a bus transfer area is foreseen.

This section of Line 2 to the area of Agios Nikolaos is estimated to serve at least 67,000 passengers per day, while the number of residents of the area served by the 3 new stations within 500 meters from their home is estimated at about 42,000 and the corresponding jobs served about 5,000.

Line 4 – Future extensions

The new line 4 of the Athens Metro, however, will not be limited to section A “Veikos-Goudi”, as the design is foreseen to expand to other areas.

The line will pass through Kifissia Avenue, which has a serious daily traffic problem. This project is projected to end the isolation from the fixed track means of the northern suburbs and the workers in the hundreds of companies based along this central road.

This section will serve the OAKA and the commercial pole of the area, while with the “Lykovrisi” station it will end very close to the highway.

The current Athens Metro Development Plan includes the Metro Line 4, Grove of Veikos-Evangelism-Faros-Marousi, with its extensions (A) to Byron/Ano Ilioupoli and (b) to Petersburg and the highway. Line 4, “U”, consists of 2 strands of radial form, to Galatsi and Marousi, and a central section passing through the center of Athens, has a total length of 38.2 km, includes 35 total stations and consists of five subdivided sections, A, B, C, D and E:

The design of extensions is another important part of the company object. In Athens, the OASA is responsible for this level of planning. In this year, it is implemented by Attica’s transport study, which will also result in the design, feasibility and viability of subway network extensions.

The extension of line 2 south to Glyfada and the extension of the subway to Kallithea has been expanded at Attica, ensuring the connection of SNFCC to the subway network.

The extension of Line 4 west is studied from the “Alsos Veikos” station to Agioi Anargyroi and Petersburg, which will pass through Nea Ionia and New Philadelphia and the AEK stadium.
