With overwhelming majorityThe Regional Council of Western Macedonia decided, on Monday night, to adversely oppose the “Strategic Environmental Impact Study (IP) on the plan to create a network of energy -energy plants (AEPA).

After a five -hour meeting, the Council clearly stated the “No” its in the creation of a waste combustion unit in the area of New Lignite Unit of PPC “Ptolemais V”. The proposal for the project was submitted five months ago by the President and Managing Director of PPC, George Stasis, during his visit to the area.

All the factions of the Regional Council, except one adviser, almost unanimously supported the recommendation of the Regional Governor George Amanatidis, asking the government to “Withdraws the IP and cancel any plan to create a waste combustion plant in the area”.

Universal reaction from bodies and self -government

The set of bodies of Western Macedonia was negatively positioned against the construction of a combustion unit, reinforcing the position of the Council. The 13 municipalities of the Region participated in the disagreement, following unanimous decisions of the Municipal Councils, as well as the Regional Union of Municipalities of Western Macedonia, the TEE/Section West. Also important was the intervention of the Kozani Medical Association, which submitted scientific evidence of the health impact of the population from emissions of pollutants in European areas that operate similar combustion units.

Western Macedonia: A protagonist in recycling

According to regional authorities, the Western Macedonia It pioneers nationwide in European waste management targets and achieves high recycling rates. The Region has five separate bins for paper, glass, plastic, aluminum and organic waste, while in 2016 it first inaugurated in Greece the MEA, where mechanical processing and separation of green bin waste was achieved.

As the Regional Governor George Amanatidis and the President of the DIAFYMA and Mayor of Eordaia, Panagiotis Plakentas, pointed out in their placements. “Further enhancement of integrated waste management in Western Macedonia with the support of DIAFYMA to fully meet the conditions of European and national legislation”. This position was unanimously supported by the members of the Council.

Finally, the Regional Council authorized the Regional Governor to take all necessary steps to implement the decisions taken.
