The Economic Chamber of Greece expresses his intense concern about the recent implementation of the decision to introduce the economic literacy course into secondary education.
In a letter to the Minister of Education, Sofia Zacharakis, the President of the AIF, Konstantinos Kollias, recalls the satisfaction of the request of the Financial Chamber by then Minister of Education, Kyriakos Pierrakakis, who provided for the introduction of a two -hour period.
“This decision had been welcomed by the business and academic community as the beginning of an essential attempt to acquire knowledge and skills in a critical phase of their personality and future career.”
The President of the AIF transfers everyone’s frustration, for the fact that the lesson was eventually introduced to the 3rd Gymnasium and even with a single teaching time.
As he characteristically says, “this change degrades the value and content of economic literacy, as students are not allowed to acquire the necessary familiarity with basic economic concepts, from the management of personal finances, to understanding institutions and mechanisms of the world economy.”
The Hellenic Chamber of Commerce believes that the introduction of economic courses must be not fragmented, but systematically, in order to meet the real needs of students and society. For this reason:
• In view of the implementation of the National Baccalaureate, it considers the immediate introduction of autonomous financial courses in the Lyceum. In particular, it proposes the introduction of a two -hour Economics lesson in the First High School and the creation of Economics and Informatics orientation in the Secondary School, by establishing a two -hour financial lesson, so that students who choose the Branch of Economics will enjoy equal treatment in relation to their students.
• It also needs to increase the teaching hours in the Gymnasium so that the Economics lesson has the time needed to deepen and cultivate basic financial literacy skills.
The AIF president concludes, noting that “the strengthening of economic education must be a priority for the Greek state. Upgrading the educational process and highlighting the importance of economic literacy for young people are an investment in the future of the country. The AIF indicates its availability and commitment to immediate dialogue, providing its scientific and institutional experience for the benefit of the education system and, by extension, of Greek society and economy. “
