The Municipality of Rethymnon, in the context of the European Mobility Week and with a view to the strategy for sustainable development and environmental protection, it is proceeding with the implementation of students’ awareness and awareness program on sustainable mobility, traffic education and the safe use of environmentally friendly means of travel. The program is carried out with the support of the Green Fund and in collaboration with the Panos Mylonas Road Safety Institute. The action, according to the Municipal Authority, will be funded by the Green Fund program “Natural Environment and Climate Rules of 2025” and by the Municipality’s own resources. The aim is to enhance environmental consciousness and to shape a new generation of citizens who perceive mobility as an essential element of sustainable development. Municipal officials point out that “Students’ education on sustainable mobility and road safety issues is a foundation for the creation of a society with responsibility, ecological consciousness and respect for the public space.”. Through targeted and experiential actions, attitudes and behaviors that promote alternative ways of movement are cultivated, reduce pollution dependence and enhance children’s active involvement in creating a safer and healthy future. Pedestrian and cycling support, safe use of micro -motivation and reducing polluting transport are linked to quality of life, reducing CO2 emissions, climate durability and building a healthy urban environment.

Educational Actions in Rethymnon Schools

The program will be implemented in five school units in the Municipality: 1st and 5th Kindergarten, 2nd and 14th Primary School, as well as the 3rd High School of Rethymnon, with the participation of more than 1,000 students. Kindergartens will implement the “Asteria – Moving Stars” program, which introduces children to the basic principles of traffic in a playful way. For the students of A ‘, B’ and 3rd Elementary, I will be implemented by the ‘I am safe’, with the aim of responsible behavior as pedestrians and passengers. Students of the D ‘, E’ and F ‘will attend the’ Certain cycling ‘program, where basic rules and skills for safe cycling will be taught. The “Small Vehicles, Great Responsibility” program is designed for the Gymnasium, with an emphasis on the proper use of electric skates and other micro-alterations, highlighting the importance of responsible stance and road safety. All actions include experiential workshops, role -playing, interactive activities and specialized educational material developed by the Panos Mylonas Road Safety Institute. The initiative offers students the opportunity to be trained and practiced in safe and sustainable ways of moving, contributing to the formation of new traffic and environmental culture.
