The challenges of green transition Road transport and car market were at the center of the panel “Trends in Automobile and Electric and Hydrogenation” during the 8th ITC 2025 Infrastructure and Transport Conference.
Hellastron President Manos Braila presented the investment of Hellastron highways in electric drive. As he said, the network has more than 55 electric vehicles charging stations, with an average cover of 55 km between stations. In addition, gas stations operate in Psathopyrgos, Megara, Schimatari and Evangelism.
At the same time, he emphasized the lack of hydrogen stations, expressing optimism that Hellastron members would enrich their services in the coming years. According to Mr Braila, existing infrastructure fully meets today’s demand, as there are 25,000 electric and 32,000 plug-in hybrid cars in a total of 5.5 million vehicles in Greece.
The number of IXs with gas is 7,000, ie only 0.46% of all vehicles in the country. Mr Braila pointed out that new electric vehicles are moving up, reaching 12.3% in 2024, but the increase mainly concerns plug-in hybrid and remains below the European average. If this voltage continues, the Commission’s goal of 50% of new registrations will not be achieved.
The high cost of electric vehicles and travel, due to more expensive commercial chargers, is a major obstacle.
Evangelos Bekiaris, president of EKETA, focused on the importance of the inductive charge to move on electric vehicles and two -way charging, which converts electric vehicles into energy storage stations. He presented the hub of the production and disposal of green hydrogen in Ptolemais, noting that “new forms of energy are here to stay and our future is getting close to us.”
Dimitris Katsachis, Planet’s Senior Manager, underlined that electricity has been discussed for three decades and has now been implemented in practice, mainly on urban buses and light business vehicles. The electric experiment has begun in Athens and Thessaloniki by electric buses and van, and efforts have been made by municipalities and states to develop charging infrastructure.
Electric drive in Greece is on the rise, but further decisions are needed to maintain dynamics. The creation of a network of chargers is considered a crucial step, starting with transition to large cities. For freight transport, the transition to electricity is more difficult due to aging fleet and lack of financial tools.
SEA General Manager Dimitris Patsios referred to the mixed image of the car market, noting that 12% -13% of the market now concerns electric vehicles. However, Greece remains an “ocean” of old cars, with the most aging fleet in Europe. The average value of an electric car has been reduced from 43,000 euros to about 30,000 euros, while an electric city car is now superior to a conventional one.
