Imposition of financial sanctions was imposed by the Court of Justice of the European Union (WEU) on Greece, due to non -compliance with a 2014 decision that obliged “to stop the operation of the overloaded landfill of waste in Zakynthos, in an area characterized” Natura 2000 “.”
In its decision, the WEU notes that Greece has not stopped the operation of a landfill (landfill) located in Zakynthos National Park, a natural habitat of the “Caretta-Caretta” sea turtle, while this area was saturated and dysfunctional, resulting in the environment.
The Court points out that since June 2017 (reference date to the Commission’s letter of warning), Greece has not drawn up a settlement plan to continue the operation of the Zakynthos Landfill, according to the Directive (1999/31) governing the landfill, nor has it ceased to operate it until 2017.
Consequently, the Greek authorities are ordered to pay a fine of EUR 12,500 for each day of delay, starting from the date of issue of this Decision (Thursday 9 October) and until the date of the 2014 decision of 2014, as well as a flat amount of EUR 5,500,000.
The EU court stresses that the amounts decided are justified by the seriousness of the infringement, which poses a significant risk to the environment and human health.
