According to official figures, fraud incidents have increased by 40% through 2024, with phone scams now taking center stage. The perpetrators pretend to be employees of DEKO, banks, insurers, accountants or even police officers, in order to extort money or personal data.

The president of the Hellenic Institute of Cyber Security, Ms. Sessula, underlined that these are fake calls that mainly target the elderly: “Official bodies, such as the police or DEKO, never contact citizens by phone for such cases. We never give out personal or financial information and immediately end the call,” he stressed.

The authorities call on citizens to be especially careful and to inform the police immediately in case they receive suspicious calls or requests to transfer money.
