Coal use reached historic highs around the world last year despite efforts to switch to clean forms of energy, jeopardizing global efforts to curb global warming, the Guardian notes.
Coal’s share of electricity generation has declined as renewables have surged. But the overall increase in electricity demand has resulted in an overall increase in coal use, according to the annual State of Climate Action report released Wednesday.
The report paints a bleak picture of the planet’s chances of avoiding the increasingly severe effects of the climate crisis. Countries are lagging behind their targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which continue to rise, albeit at a slower rate than in the past.
Clea Schumer, research fellow at the World Resources Institute think tank, which led the report, said: “There is no question that we are largely doing the right things. We’re just not moving fast enough. One of the most troubling findings of our assessment is that, for the fifth consecutive report in our series, efforts to phase out coal are well short of the target.”
