War in Ukraine and the next day at the center of the 7th Delphi Economic Forum

The war in Ukraine, with its economic, social and political implications exacerbating the energy crisis and deepening the imprint of the health crisis, was at the forefront of its work 7th Delphi Economic Forum held in Delphi, April 6-9 and is under the auspices of SA of the President of the Republic, Mrs. Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

THE Mrs. Sakellaropoulou He said the “war in Ukraine has frozen historical time and space” highlighting the nuclear threat but also the need for the West to reorganize itself against revisionist and violent practices. In this context, the EU and Greece sided with the law, that is, with the Ukrainian people.

“The EU and Greece are now bridges of peace and security in the world and in the region.”

THE Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomewsent the message of solidarity and social cohesion as an antidote to crises, whether economic, geopolitical or climatic. In his speech, the Ecumenical Patriarch stressed that the economy is at the center of man and life, but sustainable development and prosperity do not coexist without taking into account the people and the environment that feeds life.

On her side, the new President of the European Parliament, Mrs Roberta Metsola, noted that Europe today is being tested by war and its effects. For this reason he highlighted the need to achieve three ambitious goals.

  • First, defense integration, with increased funding and investment in technology and border guards.
  • Secondly, in accelerating the goals of climate change and energy independence from Russia.
  • Third, address structural problems in supply chains, including the removal of risks such as the food crisis.

He highlighted the impending and growing danger that follows Russia’s invasion of Ukraine the President of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mr. Sefik Dzaferovic. As Mr. Dzaferovic said in his speech, the geopolitical risk in the Western Balkans has now increased, which threatens stability in the region and the EU. That is why he called on the EU. to manage the so-called European enlargement as a geopolitical strategy. He even asked the EU. to run for Bosnia and Herzegovina. This move, he said, will be a response to divisive and divisive tendencies in the Western Balkans.

THE Mrs Tatiana Valovaya, Director-General of the United Nations in Geneva, pointed out the crucial role of the Organization for the stability and the prevention of geopolitical developments, but also the support of refugees, during its 76 years of operation. However, he did not fail to mention that the Organization requires reconstruction in order to respond to the “New Realities”, which is also the subject of the Delphi Conference “, which arise after major crises.

Exactly on the issue of “New Realities” that come after great crises, she referred to in her speech the president of the European Cultural Center of Delphi, Eleni Arveler. According to her, after the First World War and the Spanish Flu, feminism, communism and psychoanalysis emerged. Today, after economic, pandemic, geopolitical and energy and climate change, the “New Reality” related to technology and digitization is strengthening. As he stressed, it is a “virtual reality”, where we live “the present of the future and creates two classes: the one that is dominant and has access to technology and the one that is outside.

THE Ms Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, former President of Latvia, stressed that modern organizations, such as the UN, have failed to prevent developments such as Russia’s violent invasion of Ukraine. As she said, all international organizations and the international community can condemn, impose sanctions, but it remains a follower of developments. At the same time, we live in an age where we can not separate reality from illusion. Russia insists it is not waging war, and we see civilians being killed. The new reality requires social cohesion and confirmation of the perception of reality, but in practice.

The start of the Delphi Economic Forum closed with its intervention, the Mrs. Marianna Vardinoyannis, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadoremphasizing the need for solidarity and social cohesion to deal with crises – something to which the Delphi Conference contributes – as it is a meeting point and analysis of top analyzes, views and trends.

A short welcome to Delphi was also given by Regional Governor of Central Greece, Fotis Spanos and the Mayor of Delphi, Panagiotis Tagalis.
