Metropolitan Dodonis Chrysostomos spoke today about the public reprimand he made on October 28 to the principal of a primary school for his dressing, in Zakynthos, even defending his reaction, which caused strong dissatisfaction in public opinion.

It is recalled that, when the Principal of the 1st Primary School of the island, Ilias Flambouras, went up to deliver the solemn speech at the Doxology on October 28 at the Holy Metropolitan Church of Agios Nikolaos in Zakynthos, Metropolitan Dodoni came out of the sanctuary and attacked him verbally, saying:Did you come to Church on such a day with your shirts off? Inadmissible! Stop him! Shame!».

The metropolitan, speaking on ANT1’s “Morning Greece”, defended his reaction saying that scolded him “not his clothing, for his undressing”.

“Can a professor, in the center of the church, on the National Anniversary with Doxology, speak with his shirts off? How he is dressed does not matter for the street, for his house, for the coffee shop, for the church it matters.”

The Metropolitan of Dodoni reported that he did not agree with the exhortations of blessed Christodoulos who told the world “Come as you are“, in order to bring them to the Church.

“The church cannot accept such a situation […]. In the church, unfortunately, we tolerate a tragic situation when it comes to dress. In the Temple, there are other people dressed inappropriately, both women and men, and we are patient,” he said characteristically.

In a statement, the Association of Primary Education Teachers of Zakynthos expressed its strong displeasure and condemnation of the incident, referring to it as an “unacceptable insult to the personality and dignity of a person” who has been serving education in Zakynthos with ethics, consistency and dedication for a number of years.

“The teacher does not serve the garment, but the soul; he does not teach by dress, but by example. Why pedagogical ideals are not sewn into cloth, they are shaped in the ethos, in the heart and in the look of the teacher who inspires” the announcement emphasizes.

For his part, the teacher, with a post he made on Facebook about the incident, made it clear that he did not want to provoke and that he will not give another answer, as he does not wish to escalate the issue.
