In the new design “Erytus» which concerns her water supply her Attica and government measures against it water shortage, reported speaking to the Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou, speaking of an issue that is not current but comes up from time to time.
“By 2021 the reservoirs were filled with about 1.2 billion cubic meters of water, so until then there was no problem. From 2022 onwards, a steady reduction of around 250 million cubic meters per year has started,” as he said. “This is due to the climate crisis, the reduction of rainfall by about 25%. At the same time we had a 15% increase in emissions and a 6% increase in consumption due to the high temperatures from climate change.”
“All of this leads to a phenomenon where Attica is currently facing something that it has faced many times in the previous century”, he added.
Asked whether these measures could have been taken earlier, Mr. Papastavrou noted:
“There’s always the hydrological assessment that this is a curve that comes back. If it doesn’t rain, Attica is guaranteed for at least 4 years with the measures we are taking. The measures have started. There are two sets of measures that were announced yesterday: one has to do with the long-term – which every generation does – but there are also short-term measures until 2029, such as in the biotic Kifissos, in Mavrosouvala, in areas where drilling takes place. When these are completed, they give us around 150 million cubic meters”.
The project, he continued, will secure Attica for the next 25-30 years. “Water is a public good, i.e. the property of all of us. But it does not mean that we treat it thoughtlessly. Right now it is important to know that the country has a loss of 50% of water, due to reckless use. In Israel and Singapore they use the same drop 2-3 times. We have 740 water and irrigation water providers. By 2023 there was no regulator, meaning we had 740 organizations operating autonomously without a regulator.”
“Let’s keep what the CEO of EYDAP, Mr. Sahinis, said yesterday: Greece has the cheapest and best quality water in Europe and this will be maintained. The geographical expansion of EYDAP and EYATH means that for the first time two organizations under the supervision of the state will have responsibility for both water supply and irrigation.” underlined.
Regarding the invoicesthe minister urged not to jump to conclusions. “The tariffs are issued by the Regulatory Authority in a scientific manner. Has EYDAP submitted the data, it is a decision of the independent regulator. I maintain that Greece has the cheapest and best quality water, as Mr. Sahinis said.”
On November 6-7, Greece will be at the center of global energy developments
For the Energy Council which will take place in Greece over two days November 6-7Mr. Papastavrou emphasized that both the Kimberly Guilfoyleas well as 3 other ministers her government of USA: the energy minister Chris Wrightthe interior minister Doug Bergham and the deputy minister Michael Rigas. “We will also have 25 countries. In other words, on November 6 and 7, our country will be the focus of global energy developments.”
As he said, the goal is twofold: to secure and strengthen the country’s geostrategic position as a gateway for American LNG to Europe, as well as to make important commercial agreements that will create even greater profit and benefit for the country. “We must be optimistic, I am informed that there will be important agreements that will strengthen us“, he concluded.
