The port authorities arrested a leading member of an international migrant smuggling ring as part of an operation by the security department of the Central Port Authority of Piraeus to combat illegal human trafficking.
According to ERT, officials of the Maritime Border Security and Protection Directorate (DAPTHAS) and the Security Office of K.L. Piraeus identified and arrested on November 1 a Syrian, holder of a Swedish passport, against whom a European arrest warrant was pending.
A search of the home followed, during which electronic data storage devices were seized, which are being considered as critical evidence in the case. According to the authorities, the arrested man allegedly had a leading role in an organized ring that illegally transported immigrants from the Turkish coast to the islands of the eastern Aegean and then to European Union countries.
The man was taken to the Athens Appeals Prosecutor/Penal Execution Department, where he was remanded in custody.
The operation is the result of intensive and coordinated actions by DAPTHAS, the National Intelligence Service (NISS) and the Port Authority of Piraeus, which continue to analyze the evidence and investigate the possible involvement of other people in the circuit.
