The situation in the energy market
The planet is in the midst of the worst energy crisis in decades, with energy prices soaring around the world. Indicative of the jump in growth is the wholesale price of natural gas in the European Union increased fivefold in December 2021 compared to the beginning of the year, while in the first quarter of 2022 prices continued to rise, noting up to 25% increase in relation to the highs of 2021. Of course, the crisis has affected Greece as well. In the second half of 2021, the average cost of electricity increased by 175% compared to the first, while in February 2022 the wholesale electricity price increased 320%compared to the corresponding month last year.

How did we get here? In 2021, a combination of factors led to unprecedented low levels of stored gas. The main ones are the increase in demand for goods with the restart of the economies after the lockdowns, the severe winter and the hot summer that preceded and led to an increase in electricity consumption, as well as the geopolitical turmoil in Ukraine and sanctions against Russia, which have intensified the crisis in the supply chain. All of the above resulted in increases not only in the wholesale prices of natural gas but also in electricity, as natural gas is one of the main raw materials for electricity generation. In Greece, especially, over 40%.

The measures of the state
To mitigate the effects of the large increases, the Greek state has proceeded to subsidies on electricity and gas bills, individuals and professionals. So far it has at least allocated 2.3 billion euros for this purpose. The subsidy is scalable. Larger up to 150 KWh, less than 150 KWh and above, as an incentive for energy savings. In addition, it will start in April air conditioner and refrigerator replacement program, through which it is estimated that an average household will be able to achieve even more than 30% energy savings.

PPC customers with fixed electricity tariffs (PPC myHome Enter, PPC myHome Enter + and PPC myHome Online) and gas (PPC myHome GasControl for the home and PPC myBuilding GasControl for the apartment building) have not been charged from international increases. This is because PPC fixed tariffs have a price that remains constant until the end of the contract, which lasts 12 months.
