The trial of the two doctors accused of the death of a 24-year-old man from Keramoti, Kavala, who died in May 2017, a few days after undergoing gastric banding surgery, because he was overweight, entered the final stretch. The death of the 24-year-old occurred, according to a forensic report, “from multiorgan failure on the ground of peritonitis”.
In the seat of the Three-Member Misdemeanor Court of Thessaloniki are sitting o doctor who placed the gastric ring in a private clinic in Thessaloniki and a colleague from the hospital of Kavala, where he had served the victim after the complications that occurred in his health. Both in their apologies denied their responsibilities, denying the charge of manslaughter due to negligence attributed to them.
More specifically, the former pointed out that he performed all the appropriate medical procedures. He stressed that he had explained to the victim the pros and cons of the specific operation, and informed him about the possible complications. “I never said it was a routine operation. Complications occur and we take all precautionary measures. “We try to anticipate them but unfortunately we can not always avoid them,” he said.
On the other hand, his co-accused described in detail the history of the specific incident, arguing that the view he formed was “to operate on the patient, considering that I should look”. He attributed to a decision of the director’s director the fact that the incident was not finally treated surgically at the hospital of Kavala, but at a clinic in Thessaloniki, where the patient was then treated. “The coordinating director insisted that the surgery not be performed at the hospital […] I could not do anything more […] “I do not know if he would live, if the surgery took place in Kavala”, he said, among other things.
During the apology of the second of the accused Tensions were high in the courtroom, with the 24-year-old’s relatives reacting to what he said and leaving at the suggestion of the police guards.
The trial was adjourned until mid-May, when the district attorney will speak on her motion.
