Firefighting period: Meeting for the shielding of archeological sites

The risks from possible fire event in eleven of them most important archeological sites of Greece and their shielding, were at the center of a meeting held under the competent ministers Christos Stylianidis and Lina Mendoni.

These are the archeological sites Ancient Olympia, Asclepieion of Epidaurus, Delphi, Mycenae, Mystras, Heraeus Samos, Ancient Messina, Aphaia Aegina, Epicurean Apollo, Platamonas Castle and Olympus Swords.

THE Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Christos Stylianidis stressed that the shielding of the country’s archaeological treasures and cultural heritage is first priority.

The clean-ups that are launched directly inside and outside the organized archeological sites, as well as evacuation plans per site in emergency situations, were mentioned by the Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni.

The shielding of the archeological sites in view of the firefighting period was the subject of a wide meeting of the Ministers of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Christos Stylianidis and Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni, with the Mayors and the local Deputy Regional Governors of the regions. These are the archeological sites of Ancient Olympia, Asclepieion of Epidaurus, Delphi, Mycenae, Mystras, Heraion of Samos, Ancient Messina, Aphaia of Aegina, Epicurean Apollo, Castle of Platamonas and Swords of Olympus.

The meeting took place yesterday afternoon at the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, and was attended by the Deputy Minister of Environment George Amyras, the Deputy Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Evangelos Tournas, the Secretary General of Forests of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Konstantinos Vassapaleis Konstantinos Politas Araras.

During the meeting, a complete presentation was made of the data that emerged from mixed-scale autopsies of the competent Ministries of Culture and Climate Change, which took place in the immediately preceding period. In this context, the risks of a possible fire were recorded and their overall vulnerability was assessed. The autopsies were carried out in collaboration with the competent Ephorates of Antiquities of the Ministry of Culture, in order for the Regions and the Municipalities, after receiving knowledge, to be actively involved in issues within their competence for fire protection issues. For each body, the actions that need to be implemented with a defined schedule have been identified.

During the meeting, the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Christos Stylianidis noted that the protection of the country’s archaeological treasures and cultural heritage is a first priority of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, always in cooperation with the Ministries of Environment and Culture. Warmly to the Minister Lina Mendoni and the Deputy Minister George Amyras for the excellent cooperation. “On the basis of this cooperation that we have inaugurated between the two Ministries, we proceed in time to take all the necessary measures for the shielding of ten of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. “Always with the aim of prevention, the right preparation, we work together to ensure the wealth of the country, our cultural heritage and our natural environment”, said Mr. Stylianidis characteristically.
As the Minister of Culture and Sports Lina Mendoni stressed, “Last summer was a difficult period with large fires across the country. Since last November, we have been working closely with the Ministry of Culture and Sports with the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, and to prepare, having set up a joint Working Group, to jointly and with the assistance of experts to coordinate the major issue of archeological sites. Based on multidisciplinary criteria, we have compiled a list of the archaeological sites that face the highest risk – without this meaning that no such provision is taken for all archaeological sites in the territory – in order to immediately launch cleanups inside and outside the organized archaeological sites, as well as and evacuation plans per site in emergency situations. I thank the Minister Christos Stylianidis and his associates, not only for the good cooperation, but also for the quick reflexes in our requests, as well as the mayors and the Deputy Regional Governors who are with us today. “Their presence is not just important, it is necessary for all the necessary actions and for the proper coordination of the prevention actions”.

It is recalled that as of January 4, 2020, a memorandum of cooperation has been signed between the Ministries of Culture and Sports and Climate Crisis and Civil Protection to address the effects of the climate crisis and the development of Civil Protection plans at archaeological sites. In this context, a joint Working Group has been set up. After a combined assessment of the risk of fires and the vulnerability of the archaeological sites by the University of Athens, the above eleven sites were selected on a pilot basis.

In addition, an overall assessment was made of the peculiarities of these places, given the large number of visitors they receive during the summer months, while the memoranda of action prepared by the Civil Protection Directorates of the Regions and the relevant Municipalities for organized preventive removal were discussed. citizens in case of fire, according to what is provided in the General Plan for Emergency Response due to Forest Fires with the code name “IOLAOS”. Minister Christos Stylianidis also noted that organized evacuation exercises are being launched in Ancient Olympia, Epidaurus and Aphaia, in cooperation with all relevant local bodies.

The meeting was attended by the chairman of the Joint Working Group of the Ministries of Culture and Climate Crisis, EKPA professor Costas Kartalis, the Director of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities of the Ministry of Culture, Elena Kountouris and the Director of Studies and Execution , the General Director of Forests and Forest Environment of RIS Evangelos Goudoufas, the General Coordination Director of GGPP, Foivos Theodorou, as well as Nikos Lazaridis, associate of the Deputy Minister of Interior.

The meeting was also attended by the local Deputy Regional Governors P.E. Fokida George Delmouzos, P.E. Argolidas Dimitris Schinochoritis, P.E. Laconia Nikon Tzinieris, P.E. Ilia Vassilios Giannopoulos, P.E. Messinia Vassilios Kapelios, P.E. Islands Vasiliki Theodorakopoulou – Bogri, P.E. Pieria Sofia Mavridou and P.E. Samos Vassilios Panourakis, as well as the Mayors of Argos-Mycenae Dimitris Kamposos, Epidaurus Anastasios Chronis, Ancient Olympia George Georgiopoulos, Andritsainas-Krestenos Dionysios Balioukos, Anoulios Dos Deputy Mayor of Delphi Charilaos Agapitos.

Finally, the “present” was given by the Lieutenant General of the Hellenic Police, Eleftherios Garilas, as well as executives of the Fire Brigade.
