It’s getting harder and harder to order a cup of coffee. With the soaring of food prices in March, coffee was one of the items that weighed the most on Brazilians’ pockets, reaching a high of 64.7% in the last 12 months. On supermarket shelves, a 500 g packet of powder has easily exceeded R$20.
The high values make World Coffee Day taste bitter — not necessarily on the palate, but on the wallet. The date is celebrated this Thursday, the 14th.
Producers say the reasons for the increase are lower production, higher costs due to the pandemic and climate change, which caused droughts and frosts in São Paulo and Minas Gerais, directly impacting crops.
The increase, of course, ends up also being reflected in the price of espresso or strained coffee taken in bakeries and coffee shops in the capital of São Paulo, which have been making adjustments to keep up with inflation.
But it is still possible to find good coffee options in the city, with more affordable prices, especially in addresses that bet on special beans and from small producers. The selection below lists ten places in São Paulo that offer an espresso, that basic order taken on the spot, for up to R$7 — an amount that, after searching dozens of menus, was hard to find around.
