Increasing is the trend of solar radiation reaching the surface of the earth, as shown by Greek scientific research covering the period from 1981 to 2020.

The research team of meteo.gr of the National Observatory of Athens, consisting of Elisavet Galanaki, George Emmanouil, Costa Lagouvardo and Vasiliki Kotroni, published a relevant article in the international journal Atmosphere (Atmosphere) of MDPI, Digital of solar radiation that reached ground level in the wider Mediterranean region during the period 1981-2020. The study used data from the European model ERA5-Land, which provides high-resolution meteorological data.

The study shows that there is an even greater increase in solar radiation reaching the surface in Central and Eastern Europe, compared to the countries around the Mediterranean Sea. Also this increasing trend of radiation is more intense in the summer months, while from 2000 onwards the solar radiation increases at a slower rate compared to the period 1981-2000.

Solar radiation reaching ground level, according to researchers, plays an important role in the Earth’s climate and climate change. As a renewable energy source, the study of its trends – ascending or descending – per decade has been of particular concern to the scientific community.

The change per decade in the amount of solar radiation that reaches the earth’s surface depends mainly on changes in atmospheric permeability, which in turn depend on changes in cloud cover and / or changes in anthropogenic emissions of suspended particles. A possible increase in cloud cover or the concentration of suspended particles means a reduction in solar radiation reaching the ground level.
