Extensive planting and pruning program by the Municipality of Athens

One extensive “strict pruning” program and “one of the largest tree planting programs in the country” makes this year o Municipality of Athens with the assistance of specialists, highly specialized “and with full awareness of the enormous value that the green lungs have for the life of the Athenians”, as characteristically underlined in his announcement. On the contrary, in the last decade “for various reasons, the trees of Athens were not pruned and when this happened in some cases, it was almost never done in the right way”, the announcement points out. In this context, more than a thousand new trees have already been planted, while the number of total new plantings will reach three thousand, according to the Municipality.

According to the Municipality, the current one “This process is necessary, scientifically substantiated, and guarantees, in the long run, the survival and healthy growth of the capital’s trees, which are old and heavily burdened. “All the damage of time, the aggravating consequences of the urban environment, the effects of extreme weather phenomena (snowfall, heat waves, etc.), as well as the damages from the diseases are treated with care”. And it is clarified that the pruning period was extended for a few days due to the weather conditions that prevailed until the beginning of Spring.

Also for any effects that the pruning of trees has on bird nests, the Municipality points out that they are created mainly on trees located on hills, groves, but also in large parks of the city and there is special care.

In total, the Green Service of the Municipality of Athens is responsible for the care of 140,000 trees, of various species and ages in parks, roads, groves, squares, etc.
