Lazarus Saturday
The Saturday of Lazarus in the Eastern Orthodox Church and in all the catholic churches that follow the Byzantine ritual is the day before Palm Sunday. This day celebrates the resurrection of Lazarus from Bethany, an event which is described in the Gospel of John. Lazarus Saturday and Palm Sunday have a unique place in the church year as days of joy between Lent and the mourning of Holy Week.

Lazarus Saturday is a day on which, traditionally, the hermits leave their hermitages and return to the monastery for Holy Week. In Greece, on Lazarus Saturday they make special buns that look like a shrouded man and are called lazarakia, while the children sing the lazarika, carols especially for the day.
