“Children who played a lot will be better professionals, because play and childhood have all those characteristics that are missing from today’s world,” said Angelos Patsias, the teacher who was the inspirer of the award-winning school of Nature and of Colors in Fourfouras, Rethymno, but also of the pioneering Big Bang School in Thessaloniki, the school that bases its teachings on interdisciplinarity and research.
Angelos Patsias will be one of the keynote speakers at the Second International Conference on the Role of Play in the Education of Young Children Play on Early Education (April 27-30, Seraphio of the Municipality of Athens 19 Echlidon & Piraeus 144), where he will present ideas on how the school space can be turned into a research and innovation laboratory.
Answering some questions, below, he gives his own ideas for an “ideal school”, a school that will “excite” the children and make them happy.
How can a school hold children’s inquiry-based enthusiasm for knowledge discovery through real-life participation?
It is the fact that children are involved in real life that increases children’s enthusiasm for doing something. It is, after all, in the nature of man to learn and discover things that he likes and arouses interest. It is extremely difficult to convince a child that prosthesis has a meaning and it is extremely easy to give meaning to prosthesis through a construction or through business processes, etc. When you build this enthusiasm, then even the most instrumental parts of the curriculum go more efficiently. .
What do children want to be happy?
Acceptance and challenges! The first to feel safe and the second to discover themselves and feel useful.
How far do you think the Greek school is from what you would describe as an “ideal school for children”? Can this change and how?
The Greek school is not a concept – an umbrella that automatically assumes all responsibilities. The Greek school consists of people in different positions, from Ministries to our students and their families. So the biggest difficulty is for all its members to look in the same direction, to define things in the same way and to discover together what our ultimate goal is! When the common answer of all is “the child” and we mean it, then we are on a good path. However, I do not know how far we are from this …
Up to what age is play important in the development / education of children?
I remember that the board games I played as a child wrote from 6 to 99. So the board players know :) The more connected a person is with his childhood, the better. We are now seeing our children become adults quickly and to tell you the truth this makes me a little sad. Innocence, innocence, enthusiasm and creativity of childhood are invaluable characteristics. Without being an expert, I feel that children who have played a lot will be better professionals, because play and childhood have all those characteristics that are missing from today’s world.
Do you have a typical story to tell your students about the theme of the conference, namely the importance of play at an early age?
I can not think of a particular scenario to tell the truth, but I can confidently tell you that every time I play with my students or make “disorder” company our days become more beautiful and our relationships better. Even if at the beginning adults want to play it, everyone eventually melts into a fairy tale, a story, a board game or games in nature …
The Second International Conference “Play on Early Education” is addressed to anyone interested in preschool education and play-based education, to parents, psychologists, educators and generally to those who engage in activities for children.
The responsibility and organization of the conference is the Greek private school “Dorothy Snot Preschool & Kindergarten
