Appointment beatings in recent years, the members of informal groups are closed, which are recommended at school and district level, and when they see children from another area approaching, they engage in threats, verbal incidents and even incidents of violence.
These groups identify themselves with a code nameoften maintain a closed group in Instagramwhile after an incident, there is a corresponding retaliation as previous ones are created.
The phenomenon is described in ο Athanasios Kanakisa psychologist at the Central Clinic of the Thessaloniki Police Directorate, who points out that “it existed in the past, but in recent years it has intensified considerably.”
He considers that this is a “pathogenesiswhich essentially starts from the family, with the result that these problems are channeled to the children and the children find shelter in these groups, in order to either join a group of people, or even channel their own discomfort or the intensity of an infringing activity “.
He clarifies, of course, that in such a group “not everyone is a bully, as it also includes children who, precisely because they are afraid of violence, join the strong in order not to be the potential victims”.
Mr. Kanakis also refers to the phenomenon of fan violence, which, as he says, society experienced in its worst form, with his murder 19-year-old Alkihowever, emphasizes that this is the tip of the iceberg as fan incidents occur and the manifestations of violence extend beyond school to many levels.
Faced with this situation, police psychologists are in collaboration with all its services and local police departments, while participating in information activities for children in the classroom, in cooperation with schools, so that children can better understand themselves. their attitudes, lead to self-regulation. “Children are interested in learning. Of course, prevention is invisible, it is not quantified, it is not measured, we can not see its real impact “notes Mr. Kanakis while emphasizing that” the biggest job we all have to do is in the family, because that is where the issue begins “. In this context, awareness and information programs are implemented for parents on issues of cyberbullying and safe internet browsing.
School Violence Day – Violence by children and parents
Mr. Kanakis recently spoke about issues concerning children and adolescents at a training day on the role of the school in managing incidents of violence and school bullying which took place at “Noisis”, on the initiative of teachers of the 3rd High School of Thermi, the 3rd High School of Mikra, the 2nd High School of Nea Michaniona and the High School of Epanomi.
During this event, the philologist, psychologist and director of the 3rd High School of Thermi Elisavet Simoulidou presented specific ways of dealing with issues of school violence in the classroom, while the child and adolescent psychiatrist, director of the NSS at the Community Center of Psychiatry referred to issues of violence, either by children or by parents, noting that there are currently 15 prosecutors’ orders for such issues. He also noted that calls to the 1018 suicide hotline have increased by 70% in recent years compared to previous years.
Commenting on the above, the police psychologist Athanasios Kanakis pointed out to APE-MPE that the phenomenon of violence by children or parents within the family is intense and stressed that in addition to the recorded incidents, there are others, behind which “people are hiding, children are hiding, people are hiding who do not complain, as a result of which they do not become known and this whole piece is latent with all that entails “.
Growing up in school violence this school year
The director of the 3rd Mikra High School, Theodoros Goutas, also notes an increase in the phenomenon of domestic violence in the current school year, commenting on the APE-MPE that this happened after a long period of inclusion of children and their abstention from the lifelong educational process.
He also points out that there were still cases verbal attacks by parents to teachers and adds: “we wanted to see what are the causes of the phenomenon and to look at how the school community can find and apply ways to mitigate it, so that collectively we can try to find our pace again.”
Forms of intra-school violence
For increasing incident flow intra-school violence, due to the pandemic, Mr. Kanakis also speaks, who clarifies that there are cases of cyberbullying, verbal violence and physical violence. “We also see that children and adolescents develop a defensive behavior and in order to defend themselves, they carry objects such as knives with them, precisely because of this prevailing violence and the fear they experience. “Thus, many children who we would not basically say are aggressive are led to improvised ways of dealing with and defending themselves, because they are afraid to go out alone at night and report cases of attacks or threats to their friends,” he adds.
In terms of treatment, he states -among other things- that police psychologists, when called upon to intervene in a case where children declare suicidal intent, treat it with due seriousness, giving children time for emotional discharge. “We have dealt with several situations of such children who fortunately find a way after things with the appropriate guidance and supervision,” he notes.
Regarding domestic violence, he considers that it is very difficult for children to talk about their parents, who are their reference and caregivers, however he notes that it has been observed during interventions within the school context that students identify with incidents reported and talk to their teachers.
In each case, they have seized it, despite obstacles we can scarcely imagine. “
“Once children recognize this condition, they can then get into management in ways like diaphragmatic breathing, time out, thinking for a few minutes, music, sports, talking to a familiar person,” he says. meaning: “There, we adults can help, by giving advice or simply informing that we as parents are emotionally and temporally available to the children. In a modern reality that is moving at a very fast pace and where children are exposed to the internet, we must be emotionally available, to deal with situations with them, to help them in self-regulation and to prevent them from sailing alone “.
