Discussions with France and Israel on anti-UAV systems

by

The evolution of the Turkish exercise “Mavi Vatan 22” (Blue Homeland) is observed with particular interest by the officers of the Armed Forces (ED), as this year the unmanned platforms (UAV), such as UAV, have been fully integrated into the operational scenarios. τα Aksungur, ANKA-Sand not just the familiar Bairaktar TB-2.

In fact, Aksungur of the Turkish Navy successfully fired a home-made anti-ship missile (air-surface) (Roketsan), which practically means that in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean, Turkish UAVs have the ability to provide information and strike targets. Apart from the fact that the vast majority of violations in the Aegean are now carried out by the UAV, resulting in economies of scale for the Turkish Armed Forces.

The Turkish exercise “Blue Homeland” is observed with particular interest from Athens, as this year the unmanned platforms have been included in the business scenarios.

In Athens for the last two years there have been intensive discussions with various parties about the supply of UAVs, the construction of domestic and systems that will cancel the operation of Turkish UAVs. Last week, the French proposal for the supply of new UAV type Patroller and anti-UAV systems made in France was presented at GEETHA.

The most advanced discussions concern the development of an “Iron Dome” type that will focus exclusively on UAV treatment. At the core of this Israeli solution technology is the disorientation of rival UAVs and the ability to intervene even when they are on a scheduled mission or simply controlled by ground stations.

At the same time, there are discussions about how the E.D. could be strengthened. with UAVs over the rented Israeli HERON-1 operating from Skyros and the old technology Sperwer and Pegasus I-II. In this area, too, there are discussions with Israel and the US about the supply of MQ-9 Reaper. In the field of domestic production, several ambitious efforts are underway, but the current state of the domestic aeronautical industry is actually holding down expectations, as real manufacturing potential is limited.

The delay in making decisions to strengthen the E.D. in UAVs and systems for dealing with Turkish UAVs, which are now sufficiently advanced to carry out operations that were previously considered impossible, is linked to priorities that had been set several years ago in the armament design of Athens.

Apparently the need for new main surface units and fighter jets preceded, as the capabilities of Turkish UAVs were clearly underestimated.

The crises in Evros and the Eastern Mediterranean in February and August 2020 demonstrated the threat posed by Turkish UAVs, which is confirmed in various ways during the two-month war in Ukraine. The defenders are using the TB-2 for a number of operations, ranging from tackling Russian tanks to synergies in sinking the Russian flagship in the Black Sea.
