by

At the finish line to welcome them visitors They are the two emblematic “Brands” of Greek tourism, Mykonos and Santorini. A few days after the celebration of Easter, the tourist world of the two islands declares that it is ready to welcome the visitors and admirers of the two islands at the same time, as they emphasize.

Mykonos is ready this year to regain the lost time and the lost income, as stressed in APE-MPE Andreas Fiorentinos President of the hoteliers’ association of the island and current head of tourism of New Democracy, emphasizing that all those involved in tourism on the island, justifiably expect a fruitful tourist season. It is known that Mykonos together with Santorini are characterized as the most recognizable Greek destinations for international celebrities and in general economically strong tourists from the USA and from the rest of the world, adds Mr. Fiorentinos.

Focusing on the Easter period, it is emphasized that mainly the island of winds will be flooded by vacationers of the island, ie those who have a house in Mykonos, while the tourist family of Mykonos hoteliers, are ready to welcome significant flows of tourists, from the first week of May, where all the hotel businesses of the island now open, notes Mr. Fiorentinos. The belief of the hoteliers of the island is the fact that Mykonos will have a good season, the revenues of which will allow to approach a satisfactory percentage of the records of 2019.

At the moment, the expectations of the island’s businessmen are based on the fact that the air connection with the USA has been restored, with 9 flights a week. If we add to these 4 more flights a week from Canada, then the expectations of the people of the island for a record year in terms of revenue and arrivals are realistic.

It is worth noting that in a survey conducted by Lonely Planet for this year’s tourist season, the interest of American tourists in Greece is almost 5 times higher than last year and especially for Mykonos 11.6 times, respectively. Lonely Planet’s assessments of the Canadian market are in the same vein. It is estimated that this year the interest for Greece is 8 times higher than last year while, exclusively for Mykonos it is 13.4 times higher.

Santorini: The island is ready for summer

On the same wavelength and the messages for Santorini that the majority of tourist units have already opened and are waiting to receive significant flows of tourists from Easter. Speaking to APE-MPE, Anastasios Nikolaos Zorzos, former mayor and winemaker in one of the most visited wineries on the island, after emphasizing the readiness of the island for the period of both Easter and summer, notes that the season started well and appreciated that Santorini will have a very good tourist year. It is characteristic that many hotel units have opened and are already welcoming people.

In fact, Mr. Zorzos invited visitors not to see Santorini as a “postcard”, but to live and taste the products of the island and at the same time travel through time visiting the archaeological sites of the island. Santorini is not only the “Caldera”, he noted, among other things. Finally, referring to the phenomenon of excessive concentration of tourists at specific times, this year he noted that if the time distribution on cruise ships works, there will be no problem. In any case, he asked the state to put a brake on the construction of the island, as a measure of the urban-type problems that arise.

With a view to the era of sustainable tourism development and interconnections of tourism with other productive sectors of the national economy, Mr. Fiorentinos reminds that the political leadership of tourism has already taken initiatives for the holistic transition of the two emblematic islands, Mykonos and Santorini. in sustainability. In another model of tourist organization that will be the model for other areas of our country. Designed to upgrade the resilience of our tourism ecosystem, to contribute to the increase of tourism revenues and in addition to ensure the natural wealth of our places for future generations, concludes Mr. Fiorentinos.
