Significant international distinction of the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in the international virtual competition competition EuropeanLawMootCourtCompetition 2021-2022, which took place in Madrid (24 to 27 March 2022).
The group of undergraduate students of the Law School of the University of Athens that participated in the university competition of the European Union virtual trial EuropeanLawMootCourtCompetition 2021-2022 recorded a significant international distinction, as it was one of the 4 best teams of the Regional Round of Madrid and, overall, one of the 8 best of the entire competition.
The team of the Athens Law School consisted of undergraduate students Georgia (Gina) Kanellopoulou, Penelope (Pelia) Manteli, Maria-Eleni (Marilena) Mavragani and Vassilis Christodoulouwhile at the stage of writing the written memoranda they also participated the students Ioanna Pasia and Theodora Sfakianaki.
The EuropeanLawMootCourtCompetition international competition is one of the oldest and has been held since 1989 under the auspices of the Court of Justice of the European Union with the participation of more than 80 European and American universities, such as ColumbiaUniversity, Université ParisIIPantheon-Assas, King’sCollegeLondon, Université deLuxembourg, Collèged’Europe. It is based on a trial simulation before the Court of Justice of the European Union, and includes written and oral proceedings.
The peculiarity of the competition that differentiates it from others, is bilingualismwhich is graded as the teams are asked to develop their claims in English and French.
During the months of September to November, the written process of submitting petitions takes place, from which the 32 teams with the best petitions emerge, which qualify for the next round to compete in one of the two regional finals of the oral procedure. These Finals are held before renowned academics, WEU judges and lawyers of Union Law and -for this year- of free competition law. The teams that take the first two places in each regional round advance to the Grand Final, which is held at the seat of the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg.
The theme of this year’s competition raised the following issues:
(a) the compatibility with the competition law of disciplinary measures issued by a sports organization against its athletes and the compatibility of the rejection decision declaring that the organization of a European indoor championship constitutes a cartel;
b) the freedom to provide services in the EU internal market and the recognition of decisions by national competition committees in other EU Member States,
(c) the potential misuse resulting from a national provision establishing fixed-term contracts for athletes.
The preparation was undertaken by the students Emmanuela Giannoudakou, Nikos Kalantzis, Alexandra Kormentza, Alexandra Kornilaki and Alexia Paparsenou, who were members of the team that participated in the competition in 2020-2021, while the scientific supervision was undertaken by Assistant Professors Metaxia Kouskouna and Manolis Perakis.
