The vitriolic attack she received in May 2020 stigmatized not only her mentally and physically but shocked all of Greece. THE Ioanna Paliospyrou shows her strength by returning to the point of attack, “to the zero point” as she called it, and chooses to face it with a smile.
In her interview on the show “Protagonists” she talked about the horrible first days in hospital explaining her refusal, for a long time, to see her face in the mirror.
About two years later, Ioanna takes off her mask and shows her face, explaining all the procedures she went through, is going through and will go through in order to improve her condition as much as possible.
“I was waiting in the elevator to go up to the office. She was hiding in the basement. All this was done in fractions of a second. The first thing that worked was my sense of smell. I immediately understood what happened to the awful smell. Burn. Pains. She ran away. I did not see her. The liquid had fallen into my eye and everything was cloudy. The first thing that came to my mind was the pharmacy across the street. I thought I wanted help and I remembered that. I did not look at all when they crossed the road. I did not see. “I could have been hit by a car,” he said, adding: “I went into the pharmacy and shouted that I was in pain, that I wanted help. They were mobilized by my voices. I felt burning. I watched my hair fall out of the sink. The reason my eye was saved was that I immediately poured water. The doctors told me that this saved me. It helped a lot that I was rushed to the hospital. I knew it was a caustic liquid. I did not know it was vitriol. “I felt safe next to the doctors and I collapsed.”
Speaking about her days in the hospital, she said that for a while she felt those who pushed her to commit suicide. “With a lot of pain, despair, I was trying to stay alive. While I am a big fan of life and whenever I heard that someone ended his life it made me angry. Inside the hospital I thought that now I understand that some people get to the point of hurting themselves and ending their lives. For a few seconds I was at this point too. “I thought it seemed liberating to you.”
The first time she saw her face in the mirror was too short as she did not want to be forced to process what had happened. “The time came when the doctor came and put make-up on me and gave me a small mirror. I look at myself for three seconds, hold my breath and say OK. “I saw my eyes, one was very bad, my lips were drawn, I did not push myself too much.”
Today, she tries to leave everything behind, to enjoy every moment of her life and to dream about the future. As she said, now she feels good inside and sees herself “beautiful”.
