The National Weather Service of India (IMD) announced today Sunday that areas in the northwest and central part of the country recorded the highest temperatures for the month of April for 122 years!
According to IMD data, maximum temperatures in April broke all previous records in central India, as they averaged 37.8 degrees Celsius. Respectively, on average in the southwestern part of the country, the mercury rose to 35.9 degrees Celsius, about 3.4 degrees above the normal for the season level. Nationwide, this April was the fourth warmest since 1901, with temperatures hovering just above 35 degrees Celsius.
“If you look at the maximum temperatures recorded in northwest and central India, you will see that they were the highest in 122 years,” said Mutinyajai Mohapatra, director general of the Indian Meteorological Agency, at a news conference.
Mohapatra has announced that the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana are expected to face high temperatures again in May. He warned that residents will not only be called to withstand the heat during the day, but also at night.
It is worth noting that the month of March was the warmest that India has experienced in the last 122 years.
