Bolsonaro government supervised less than 3% of deforestation alerts in the country

Less than 3% of deforestation alerts issued in Brazil by Inpe (National Institute for Space Research) and other deforestation monitoring tools in the country, since the beginning of Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) administration, were inspected or occurred in areas with authorization to clear vegetation.

In other words, in the vast majority of cases, the federal government did not supervise the destruction of the environment.

The data comes from the Deforestation Inspection Monitor, a new MapBiomas tool, launched this Tuesday (3). The platform analyzed deforestation alerts issued by MapBiomas Alerta — which includes data from Deter (Inpe), from monitoring by Imazon, University of Maryland and Geodatin/UEFS (Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana) — from January 2019 to March 2019. 2022

According to the new mechanism, the federal government only monitored around 2.17% of deforestation alerts. These actions took place in an area that covers only 13% of the entire deforested territory in the country during this period.

The tool is coordinated by the ICV (Instituto Centro de Vida) and Brasil.IO, and uses public databases on inspections and environmental embargoes. In addition to the federal government, the monitor has so far centralized information from five states: Goiás, Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Pará and São Paulo.

The inspection carried out by the states is a little more comprehensive. Minas Gerais had verification or authorization actions for deforestation in about 22% of the deforested area. In Mato Grosso, 29% of the alerts were inspected or had permission to remove vegetation.

In Pará, only 1.8% of the alerts are in an area with the presence of inspection or authorization for suppression. In São Paulo, field actions reached 21% of deforestation alerts.

Finally, in Goiás, inspection reached 10% of the destruction alerts issued.
