A multi-member criminal organization, the members of which systematically committed thefts against the elderly, by the method of employment, dismantled from Department of Property Rights Protection, of the Attica Security Directorate.
How they located them
In order to dismantle the organization, in the morning hours of 5-5-2022, a coordinated police operation was carried out by the above Service, in collaboration with police officers of OPKE, the Directorate of Police Operations and the Traffic Directorate, in various areas of Attica, during which 10 locals (nine men and one woman), members of the organization, were arrested. 2 additional accomplices are wanted.
It was preceded by many months of thorough investigation by the above Service, during which the activity of a structured criminal organization was revealed, the members of which, for at least eight months, systematically committed thefts against the elderly, by the method of employment.
How the gang acted
As for the mode of action, the members of the spiral move, morning-noon hours, with vehicles owned by them or their relatives, in groups of three to five peopleroamed in various areas of Attica and specifically in places with great commercial activity (flea markets, supermarkets and shops)in order to identify their would-be victims.
Then, targeting exclusively the elderly, they discreetly followed them on their return to their homes and addressed them upon entering them, pretending to be electricity company employees or elevator maintainers.
They were then persuaded that there was an urgent need for them to enter the houses in order to investigate an alleged power outage or theft or damage to the elevator.
In some cases Carpet cleaners were pretending to deliver to tenants of the same building, taking advantage of the fact that they or their relatives traded in carpets.
By gaining access to the inside of the houses, some of them led the elderly to the usually kitchen area, where they were employed under various pretexts, while at the same time their accomplices diligently researched the other areas and removed money, jewelry and various valuables.
At the end of their criminal activity, they boarded their cars, where their accomplices’ drivers were waiting for them and they immediately fled the spot.
It is noted that during their criminal action, they took care of their flawless appearance-dressin order to be credible, in terms of the -case- status they relied on, while cases were recorded in which they showed their victims documents with the logo of an electricity company.
In cases where the elderly suspected their intentions, they did not hesitate to become particularly burdensome or even threateningin order to dispel their doubts and complete their purpose.
Upon completion of the legal actions and in an immediate time, channeled the thefts into a network of thievesin order on the one hand to obtain immediate financial benefit and on the other hand not to keep in possession and for a long time, evidence of their illegal actions.
From the research so far -22- distinguished cases of theft were investigated.
What was found in the investigations
In investigations carried out, among others, were found and confiscated:
• the amount of -27,150- euros
• the amount of -3,140- US dollars.
• lots of jewelry, watches and other valuables
• -2- “business” cars
• items of clothing worn during the illegal activities
The arrested, with the case against them, were taken to the Athens Public Prosecutor for Misdemeanors.
