Freedom of the Press: Greece higher than many European countries – Map

by

In complete contrast with the report of the NGO Reporters Without Borders his counterpart is coming Council of Europe for freedom of press in terms of Hellas. Our country is in a high position, above many European countries.

The well-established report on press freedom was published in end of April the Council of Europe. The detailed report presents the methodology used to carry out the conclusions and to obtain the ranking of the countries. The results of the report come to solemnly refute a corresponding report prepared by an NGO, and not by the official EU bodysuch as Reporters Without Borders.

Especially regarding the position of Greece, but also of other countries, the difference is very obvious. It is indicative how in the NGO report, Greece was placed in the last place among the “27”, while reference was made to “Northern Cyprus” – the pseudo-state in the Occupied Territories – which in fact was presented over our country.

At the same time, however, the official report of the Council of Europe comes to put things in their place and in their proper dimension. This report takes into account, inter alia, the guarantees provided by the laws of each country for freedom of expression, the safety of journalists and those with public discourse, the independence and pluralism of the press as well as the credibility of the media and the trust in information provide.

In this report, then, Greece is at the middle level like most European countries, as you will see in the relevant map. Above our country are Germany, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Austria, the Netherlands and Portugal. At the same level as Greece are Spain, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Estonia, Lithuania and Belgium.

On the contrary, countries such as Italy, France, Ireland, Poland, Latvia, Serbia, Romania, Albania, Bulgaria, Skopje and, of course, Turkey are at a low level of freedom of the press.
