Analyzes of data concerning case of the death of three little girls in Patras will be made in the state-of-the-art spectrometer of the Laboratory of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology of the Department of Medicine of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, which thanks to its technology can detect substances in very low concentrations, not visible from conventional machines, but also substances with very high molecular weight. also can not be detected by the conventional protocol.

Sources of the Laboratory point out to APE-MPE that this is very useful, especially in cases where non-conventional materials are analyzed, such as the tissues in formalin and the paraffin blocks that are to be analyzed. At the same time, they clarify that it is unknown what will happen and state that, depending on the findings, the process will proceed step by step.

The same sources say that the analyzes are very fast, however it is not known when the toxicological tests as this depends on their results.

Regarding the possibilities of using the spectrograph, they emphasize that this model of the specific machine is the only one in Greece and point out that two years ago, when it was procured, one should go abroad for such analyzes. It is essentially a process that resembles that of fingerprint identification as the spectrograph detects the molecular imprint of each drug, to be followed by its identification through comparisons with the substance libraries created by the Laboratory of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Thanks to this machine, after all, the analyzes that have been made have been extended to other samples such as bone marrow, skeletal remains from excavations or decaying biological materials to identify any drugs or drugs.

At the same time, it is known that, in the context of cooperation between the Medical School of AUTh and Papageorgiou Hospital, this instrument will be used in clinical and forensic toxicology but also in clinical toxicity studies for the approval of drugs and this will be done in Greece for the first time.

The purchase of this system was made with funding of 380,000 euros from the operational program of the Region of Central Macedonia 2014-2020, while according to the governor Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the relevant decision was made very quickly after the submission of the request by the AUTh, as it was realized. the usefulness of its operation.
