The “Ptolemaida Storage” storage project developed by the EUNICE ENERGY GROUP (EEG) was selected as the “pilot” for the battery power units by the European Electricity Transmission System Operators (ENTSO-e).
Specifically, the project was included in the group of investments of European interest that will be studied by ENTSO-e executives in terms of their impact on GDP, investment, job creation, public finances, etc. in order to draw conclusions about its footprint. all investments in electricity transmission systems, which are included in the ten-year ENTSO-e program.
The study of the socio – economic impact of these projects began last year (the first report was announced in February 2021) and will be repeated every two years. The reason ENTSO-e started this study is that, in times of crisis such as the current (pandemic, Ukraine) it is necessary beyond the development of electrical systems to record the wider footprint of projects in the national and European economy.
The previous study, 2021, was based on a sample of 9 projects (underground and submarine cables, substations, energy storage) and concluded that the implementation of the ten-year development plan TenYearNetwork Development Plan (TYNDP) of ENTSO-e involves investments of 118 d. which will create 1.7 million new jobs, while leading to a 100 billion increase in GDP and a 45 billion increase in public revenue. will not only lead to a carbon-free energy future and bring the consequent benefits assessed in the TYNDP cost-benefit analysis, but it will also improve the lives of European citizens by investing directly in their work and future. The benefits calculated from this evaluation show that the TYNDP portfolio, if fully implemented, would bring significant employment and economic benefits to Europe and Europeans. “Employment for many years would be guaranteed, as large-scale transport and storage projects require several years of construction.”
As energy market sources point out, the selection of a project of Greek interest for the next ENTSO-e study is a positive message for both the country and the specific investment as it certifies the realism of the business plan and its importance for its development. battery storage at European level, a technology that is evolving internationally. In addition, for Greece it is of particular importance as the PtolemaidaStorage project is part of the development transition plan (SDM) of lignite areas (it is one of the 16 emblematic investments included in the SDAM), as it aims, among other things, to create jobs that will replace to some extent those lost from the restriction of lignite activity.
According to TYNDP, the Ptolemaida project will have a capacity of 250 megawatts, a storage capacity of 1000 megawatt hours and will deliver to the system through the high voltage network (400 kilovolts), 250 gigawatt hours per year.
Energy storage units play a key role in energy systems, especially in conditions of high penetration of renewable energy sources as they ensure the absorption of “green” energy in periods of high production, energy efficiency in “low” periods, provide backup services in case of failure or energy transfer, etc.
