On the map of the countries they have recorded cases of acute hepatitis in children Greece entered, as the three cases that were announced yesterday by EODY as “suspects” are now officially considered cases as reported to the ECDC.
As he announced yesterday the EODYin our country, after an active search of the cases, three cases of children with acute hepatitis were identified that meet the criteria of the “possible case”, according to the definition of the World Health Organization. Two of them, aged 14 months and 10 years, showed symptoms from the gastrointestinal tract (abdominal pain and vomiting) and fever and the laboratory test showed an increase in liver enzymes (transaminases> 500 IU / ml). The other 18-month-old was asymptomatic and its transaminases were found to be elevated> 500 IU / ml in a prophylactic laboratory test. Test for viral hepatitis A-E was negative in all children No EBV, CMV, adenovirus or SARS-CoV-2 virus was detected in the rest of the laboratory test. One was not hospitalized and both needed a few days of hospitalization. The children did not show any complications, did not receive special treatment and are in excellent general condition.
The clinicians are aware of this emerging situation, they have been informed and are vigilant for the timely detection of children up to 16 years old, who show signs and symptoms of hepatitis, without a clear reason and in such a case fill in and send to EODY a declaration form.
Ο ΕΟΔΥ closely monitors the progress of the situation, is in regular communication with the European Public Health Institutions, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) and has already informed all the Health Regions of the country, the Panhellenic Medical Association, as well as the Scientific Societies, whose members may face similar incidents. Instructions have also been sent for the collection and dispatch of samples to the Central Laboratory of Public Healthin order to immediately carry out the necessary control to identify the cause of the epidemic outbreak.
Plevris: We are ready for any eventuality
The issue of acute hepatitis in children was mentioned in an interview on Real radio, the Minister of Health Thanos Plevris.
“We also did a retrospective check of 1/1 to see what the characteristics were in our hospitals. There is a definition combined by the World Health Organization for which cases can be classified as hepatitis, the main feature of which is that does not belong to the known types that we have, so when we have these characteristics, we standardize these cases as cases of hepatitis that we have an outbreak now. These characteristics had all three cases. The cases are not related to each other and all the cases have been completely cured. There is absolutely no problem.
We are fully prepared and fully informed in all hospitals.
Even in the unfortunate scenario that requires a transplant, we already have a contract with two centers in Rome and Palermo, so there is a full readiness, but we do not have a picture at the moment that leads us to a bigger boom. “We are under surveillance, not complacency, but we do not have characteristics that the population should be concerned about.”
