Takis Theodorikakos: Internet access is easy, but not harmless

by

At the Municipal Cinema “Melina Mercouri” in Ano Glyfada was organized a day on the dangers and rules of internet safety organized by the International Institute for Cybersecurity CSI Institute under the auspices of the Ministry of Civil Protection.

The title of the conference was: “Risks and safety rules on the Internet: How to protect your children». It was the first of a series of events that will take place across the country and the response from the people was very great.

The keynote speaker was the Minister of Civil Protection Takis Theodorikakos, while Mr. Manolis Sfakianakis, Lieutenant General e.a. of EL.AS. and President of the CSI Institute, as well as the Director of the CSI Institute, Professor of Criminology and Founder of Traumahelp, Ms. Kalliopi Ioannou presented ways for safe internet browsing.

The speech of the Minister of Civil Protection:

“The electronic revolution has fundamentally changed the environment we live in and the way we act in all areas of everyday life.

The achievements of the digital age – unthinkable even a few years ago – have radically reshaped the way we communicate, work, study, trade professionally, approach people and situations.

Of course, we must not forget that the digital world is not just a tool.
And the tool has the value that the user gives it.

Just as with a simple knife one can cut a fruit but also kill it, so with digital media one can do the greatest good but also inflict the greatest blow.

So along with the digital revolution and all the facilities and amenities it has brought, unfortunately the accompanying forms of crime have also developed.

Absolutely reasonable and expected, as crime is inherent in human activity.

Every field of new human intervention and action is at the same time a field of manifestation of delinquent behavior.

Internet access is easy, instant and cheap. But it is not harmless and those who believe the opposite, do not understand the risk and harm that its careless use can cause.

So what can society and the coordinated state do to protect its most vulnerable members, and especially our children, from the dangers posed by the internet.

Whatever he does in any other activity he wants to control. The State Enacts Laws and polices their implementation.

Society educates and creates habits and mentalities. And parents advise and stay constantly on the alert because the dangers are constant and permanent.

The Greek Police and specifically the Cybercrime Prosecution, the pioneer and -essentially- founder of which is Manolis Sfakianakis, remains the helper of society in this perpetual defense against cybercrime.

It was created under adverse conditions for the time, in an office with three people. Since then, the development has been impressive. Cybercrime Prosecution now has a high level of staff, equipment, excellent knowledge and significant experience.

From these executives we obtain the necessary information to plan and execute all the necessary state actions but also to reach the necessary legislation. We must be aware, of course, that regulatory control of the internet is by definition difficult and because of this no country has been able to fully implement it. That is why I believe that this is an area where international cooperation is essential.

I assure you that the Greek Police, the cybercrime prosecution and the Greek government in general, will do their duty in full.

Of all the weapons we have in our quiver, you are the most effective! And it is none other than your vigilance. The vigilance and the absolute attention to your children. Because they are at the greatest risk.

An online scam can be detected. Insurance companies can cover potential losses and banks can provide solutions when, for example, our credit card details are intercepted.

But a nude photo that will be sent to all the cell phones of a school class can leave indelible marks on a child’s soul. Slander and accusations that “adorn” the walls of Facebook, will not be easily forgotten. There, there is no defense. There is only prevention!

I’m sure we have all found that since cell phones and tablets have come into our lives, children rarely ask for other gifts. Unfortunately books and games have taken second place. I also realize that as long as a child looks at a screen, the house is quiet. And this is convenient. But it can be dangerous and fatal.

That is why I say this and I repeat it at every opportunity: Let us not “park” our children. We must not leave them unattended at the mercy of miserable pedophiles or oppressed subjects, who for many reasons, will not hesitate to humiliate those children who are carried away in a moment of weakness or due to lack of judgment. The right judgment will take root in their minds and only if we, the parents, are constantly by their side, explaining the dangers, without shame and half-heartedness.

Today’s day is an occasion to open a large circle of information about cybercrime, especially when it comes to crimes against our children. Because, let ‘s not forget, cyber bullying, trafficking in pornography, incitement to obscene acts, public deportation and slander are all serious crimes.

But parental prevention and care can go a long way. That is why the Ministry of Civil Protection is preparing an information campaign, which will provide the impetus and knowledge to every parent to do what is required.

We will be for this purpose as well, next to the Greek family, next to the children, next to the citizen! “
