London, Thanasis Gavos

The Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom Liz Trace she told her counterparts from G7 during their meeting in Schleswig-Holstein in Germany on Thursday night that they should commit to new waves of sanctions against Russia for invading Ukraine.

He also called on them to agree that sanctions should remain in place until there is a complete withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukrainian territory, as well as a peace deal with financial and technical assistance to Ukraine.

Ms. Tras also said: “Putin is humiliating himself on the international stage. We must ensure that he faces a defeat in Ukraine that will deprive him of any benefit and ultimately contain further aggression (on his part). To help Ukraine we need to go further and faster. The best long-term security for Ukraine will come from being able to defend itself. This means providing Ukraine with a clean corridor to NATO-level equipment».

In a statement, she reiterated that it was “very important at this time to keep up the pressure on Vladimir Putin by providing more weapons to Ukraine and increasing sanctions.”

Ms. Tras will also attend a meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers on Saturday in Berlin.

In a communication yesterday with the Secretary General of the Alliance Jens Stoltenberg, Ms. Tras stated that it was agreed to make every effort for Ukraine to have a NATO-level defense.

They also discussed the need the Alliance to have a “global rationale“, While the minister stressed Britain’s support for Sweden and Finland’s ambitions to join NATO.
