The cold wave that surprised different states with an icy dawn this Wednesday (18) behaves like a kind of tourist who, prevented from going out into the Atlantic, took a liking to Brazil and decided to discover new destinations.
Until next weekend, your itinerary that started on Monday (16) in Rio Grande do Sul — where it has already caused a subtropical storm — will reach Acre, dropping thermometers along the way.
According to meteorologist Andrea Ramos, from Inmet (National Institute of Meteorology), what makes this wave peculiar is not so much the intensity of the cold that it provides, but the length of stay in the country, which makes it pass through regions atypical, such as the Midwest and North of Brazil.
“Usually the autumn polar masses start in the south of the globe, pass through Argentina and the southern region of Brazil and in a matter of two to three days they migrate to the Southeast, already losing strength. But this current one was affected by the change in the direction of the winds caused by by La Niña, which prevent it from coming out and dissipating”, declares the meteorologist.
Upon finding resistance to dissipate over the ocean, the phenomenon travels through the Brazilian territory with even more intensity. Whirling, it hits more regions of Brazil with cold and gusts of wind.
The phenomenon provides rapid temperature drops and significant differences in thermometers even between close states. This Wednesday, for example, while São Paulo faced 7.2°C in the morning and Belo Horizonte had 6.7°C, Vitória, marked a mild 20.5°C.
In São Paulo, the minimum recorded of 6.6°C has not occurred since 1990. The interior of the state has two other cities among the five coldest on Tuesday (17): Campos do Jordão, which registered -0.1° C and Ituverava, with 0.7°C, according to Inmet. By the end of the week, the wave should reach Rio Branco (AC) and the south of Amazonas and Pará, causing a meteorological phenomenon called friagem.
Visited by surprise by the cold wave, Campo Grande registered 8.7°C at 7 am. On this same day in 2021, the minimum temperature in the capital of Mato Grosso do Sul was 29°C. Similar chills experienced residents of Rio de Janeiro, which dawned at 11.8°C, and the Federal District, where it was 8.7°C.
Before scaring Brazilians in atypical regions, the cold wave caused snow and some damage in the southern states. Santa Catarina recorded Tuesday’s national low of -2.5°C in Bom Jardim da Serra. The six Inmet snow records also occurred in the southern states, in Cambará (RS), São José dos Ausentes (RS), Urupema (SC), Urubici (SC), São Joaquim (SC) and Palmas (PR). According to Inmet, the storm is a kind of phenomenon strayed from the wave of cold air, which causes wind gusts of around 100 km/h and can cause damage. Yakecan was reclassified from cyclone to subtropical storm by the Navy on Monday (16), when the National Civil Defense issued an alert about the phenomenon. Both are low atmospheric pressure systems that move clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere, but the magnitude of the storms is greater. The subtropical denomination refers to the temperature, which is higher in the core than in the atmosphere around it.
In RS, the impact of the Yakecan caused damage to the electricity supply. On the coast of Paraná, winds reached 70 km/h and crossings to Ilha do Mel were suspended. According to Simepar (System of Technology and Environmental Monitoring of Paraná), there was frost in some regions of valleys and mountain coasts.
