The human mind does not fit what happened in “Papanikolaou”! A 43-year-old man left his last breath in a στα chair in the hospital emergency room, while a little earlier he had been discharged from the medical staff!
This inconceivable incident occurred on the night of April 1. The 43-year-old was at home and felt pain in his leg, calling EKAB on his own to be served at “Papanikolaou”. There, he was examined by a hospital surgeon who immediately ruled that he had nothing serious and that he could leave. However, the 43-year-old reacted as he was still not feeling well, while in fact there was tension with the medical staff.
When the tones rose and he refused to leave, then Papanikolaou’s security guards were called, who demanded that he leave the area! He even told them that he would not leave the hospital and chose to sit in a chair in the emergency room of Papanikolaou, where about an hour and a half later he ended up. The tragedy is that his body was located many hours later, at around 11 in the morning, when the shift of the medical staff changed.
As the 43-year-old did not have identification on him, the Greek Police was informed, where they rushed to the spot after informing the hospital that a dead man was in the ward. ELAS forces were looking for the identity of the victim, as a result of which they called all the relatives of the people who had arrived at the emergency room that night. After contacting the hospital staff – and while the doctor who gave the discharge is also wanted – relatives of the 43-year-old are finally called to go to Papanikolaou to identify the body.
“If they took oxygen from him they would understand that man is dying”
The victim’s brother, Andreas Karabas states shocked to ThessToday.gr about the death of the unfortunate man, as he can not believe that earlier they were talking about a simple leg pain and a few hours later he learned that the 43-year-old left his last breath in the chair! “If they took oxygen from him or did a stethoscope test, they would understand that the person is dying. “Nothing was observed from the protocol and it ended”, said Mr. Karabas to ThessToday.gr.
As if that were not enough, the hospital doctors initially did not allow the recognition to be made, citing covid reasons, emphasizing that the 43-year-old was positive for the coronavirus. Only the necropsy – autopsy – which was performed eight days later and after a signed document from the prosecutor – found that the 43-year-old man was not infected with coronavirus, while the standard examinations he underwent were performed in a single ward and not in a covid unit.
When the victim’s family signed the identification of the 43-year-old, they stated that they would take legal action against anyone responsible for negligent homicide.
“If the necessary examinations had been taken, it would not have ended”
The technical advisor of the family, Dimitris Galenteris estimates through ThessToday.gr that if all the necessary examinations had been taken, the 43-year-old would still be alive, while he explains that the mechanism of the pulmonary embolism is under investigation.
“From the autopsy findings, we are investigating the scenario of a pulmonary embolism, ie a thrombus that started from the lower extremities and reached the lungs and blocked their perfusion,” said Mr. Galenteris, emphasizing, however, that “it is not yet for sure, as we are waiting for the results of the toxicological-histopathological examinations that will give us answers to the causes of death “. According to the technical advisor of the family, the preparation of the complete medical file is expected to be implemented within the next five months.
Lawyer: “We are looking to see if with some simple measures the tragedy could have been avoided”
The legal advisor of the family, Theodoros Manolis in his statements to ThessToday.gr stated that in case a negligent homicide is found, the relatives of the victim will file a lawsuit against anyone responsible. “Together with the technical advisor we appointed and the medical examiners of both ELAS and the hospital, we are waiting for answers about the exact causes of death, whether there were mistakes and omissions from the hospital and whether the tragedy could have been avoided if any simple measures “, he said, emphasizing that” we are still under investigation. “Everything we say next we want to be medically proven.”
