Politico: Greece wants to expand the wall in Evros by 80 km

by

In the plans of the Commission and of Greece for the treatment of the immigration issue, an article is mentioned in Politico.

Specifically, it cites information that Greece wishes to extend the fence by 80 km in Evros with EU funds

According to Politico, Greece is in intensive discussions with the Commission on its immigration plan for the period 2021-2027. The latest draft proposal sent by Athens to the European Commission states that it should be allowed to use EU funds to build a wall. along its border with Turkey.

The question of whether EU funds could be used to build a border wall arose last autumn, after Politico reported for the first time that 12 EU countries – mainly Eastern European but including Greece – sent a written request to the Commission requesting funding for walls and fences.

After the President of the Commission Ursula von der Leyen categorically rejected the use of EU funds for “barbed wire and walls”, the President of the European Council Charles Michel for his part argued that such a thing could be done legally.

The Commissioner for Home Affairs Ilva Johansson is going to meet with the Greek Minister of Immigration Noti Mitaraki in New York today as talks intensify — both in the city for the International Forum on Immigration Review — while Greek officials will be in Brussels for discussions.

At the same time, according to Politico, Greece claims that it is legally allowed to use the EU funds it receives through the Border Management and Visa Policy (BMVI) program to finance the construction of a fence. Near the crossing of the river Evros, a wall of 28 kilometers has already been built, while Athens is looking for money from the EU for another 80 kilometers. According to Politico, the request is opposed by Von der Layen and Elva Johansson.
